Frances Tiafoe will be one of the big American hopes at the US Open this year.
American tennis is still searching for its next men’s Grand Slam singles champion, with the last coming when Andy Roddick won the 2003 US Open.
Tiafoe admittedly made a mistake at the US Open last year, despite reaching his second semifinal at the New York major.
He was beaten in that semifinal by Taylor Fritz, who subsequently lost the US Open final to Jannik Sinner.
Although Tiafoe is a potential contender for the US Open singles title, it does not appear that he will be a strong hope for doubles success.

Frances Tiafoe has an alarmingly poor record in doubles competition
Tiafoe is the world number 12 in singles, but is currently unranked in doubles.
That is not because he hasn’t played any doubles matches over the past year, as Tiafoe has played in five different ATP doubles tournaments in the last 12 months.
These different doubles pairings have not gone well for Tiafoe, who has actually lost 10 consecutive doubles matches.
| Tournament | Frances Tiafoe’s doubles partner | Result |
| Shanghai Masters 2023 | Mackenzie McDonald | Lost in the first round to Wesley Koolhof & Neal Skupski |
| US Men’s Clay Court Championships 2024 | Michael Mmoh | Lost in the first round to Anirudh Chandrasekar & Vijay-Sundar Prashanth |
| Italian Open 2024 | Felix Auger-Aliassime | Lost in the first round to Alexander Bublik & Ben Shelton |
| Roland Garros 2024 | Dustin Brown | Lost in the first round to Marcus Daniell & Mackenzie McDonald |
| Laver Cup 2024 | Ben Shelton | Lost to Carlos Alcaraz & Casper Ruud |
| Shanghai Masters 2024 | Alexander Bublik | Lost in the first round to Santiago Gonzalez & Eduoard Roger-Vasselin |
| US Men’s Clay Court Championships 2025 | Michael Mmoh | Lost in the first round to Robert Galloway & Jackson Withrow |
| Madrid Open 2025 | Alejandro Davidovich Fokina | Lost in the first round to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard & Albano Olivetti |
| Queen’s Club Championships 2025 | Brandon Nakashima | Lost in the first round to Nikola Mektic & Michael Venus |
| Washington Open 2025 | Ben Shelton | Lost in the first round to Michael Ebden & John Peers |
Some of the players Tiafoe has lost doubles matches with include Brandon Nakashima, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Alexander Bublik.
Most recently, Tiafoe played with Ben Shelton at the Washington Open, where they lost in the first round to Matthew Ebden and John Peers.
However, it was actually Shelton who Tiafoe won his last doubles match with, all the way back at the Laver Cup in 2023.
The closest Tiafoe has come to winning a doubles title came in 2017, when he lost in the final of the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships alongside Dustin Brown, the player who once beat Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon.
Tiafoe’s poor record in doubles competition is now particularly of concern after the US Open have made a big announcement involving him.
Why is Frances Tiafoe’s doubles record bad for the US Open?
The US Open have completely revamped their mixed doubles event this year, whittling down the number of teams from 32 to 16.
Preferential treatment has also been given to singles players, with the US Open being heavily criticised for these changes.
There were a total of 27 teams that entered the US Open mixed event, with the tournament having to whittle those down to just 16.
Nearly all of those teams have now been confirmed, with eight of those receiving direct entry through their combined singles ranking and the other eight will be given wildcards.
Six of the eight wildcards have now been announced, including the American pairing of Tiafoe and Madison Keys.
While it is undeniable that Tiafoe and Australian Open champion Keys have star quality and will bring eyes onto the event, it does bring the legitimacy of the tournament into question.
Tiafoe has not won a doubles match in nearly two years, and Keys is only playing her second WTA doubles tournament of the year at the Canadian Open.
When an event that is still billed as a Grand Slam tournament includes players who are essentially like Tiafoe and Keys, but not top doubles players Katerina Siniakova and Marcelo Arevalo, it does make it hard to take the event seriously.
Tiafoe will look to bring his losing streak in doubles to an end at the Canadian Open, where he is playing alongside his compatriot Alex Michelsen.
