Tommy Paul has just added an eye-popping entry to his overflowing highlight reel after arguably making the best shot of his tennis career.

Paul has enjoyed a bright start to the 2025 season, with the 27-year-old at a career-high ninth in the rankings after a quarter-final run at the Australian Open.

Despite losing to eventual finalist Alexander Zverev in Melbourne, Paul equalled a 21-year Andy Roddick record along the way.

Incidentally, the American number two has developed a reputation for playing a thrilling brand of tennis on the ATP Tour, with Paul posting multiple head-turning trick shots.

And in his first-round Dallas Open match against compatriot Jenson Brooksby, Paul pulled off a shot-of-the-year contender.

Tommy Paul hits shot of the year contender at Dallas Open

After losing the first set to Brooksby, Paul broke early in the second set but the 24-year-old was pressing hard to draw level instantly.

The 6ft 4in Californian pulled off what looked like would be a point-winning lob, only for Paul to hit a no-look over the head shot – which left the crowd stunned.

Tennis TV commentator Mikey Perera exclaimed, “No way! Tommy Paul, that’s unbelievable!”

Co-commentator Naomi Broady added, “This is absolutely ridiculous! What is that?”

After beating Ben Shelton to win the Dallas Open last year, Paul is dead-set on retaining his title and went on to beat Brooksby 6-7 (6) 6-3 6-4 on Tuesday; setting up a last-16 encounter against fellow American Ethan Quinn.

Paul has competition with Lorenzo Sonego

While Paul will grab the headlines for this effort, a certain Lorenzo Sonego may give him a run for his money when it comes to the best shot of the year.

During his first-round match at the Australian Open against three-time grand slam winner Stan Wawrinka, the Italian produced a vast array of stunning winners.

During his 6-4 5-7 7-5 7-5 victory over the Swiss veteran, Sonego executed a miraculous no-look behind-the-back shot to send fans wild.

It is only February but these shots from Sonego and Paul will take some beating in 2025.
