Victoria Azarenka makes WTA history after winning in the first round in Toronto

Victoria Azarenka has often been in and around the top WTA players throughout her fantastic tennis career.

Azarenka reached the very top of the world rankings back in 2012, with the Belarusian currently in 19th spot.

Now 35, she remains a real threat to the world’s very best, with the WTA star now aiming to cause an upset at the Toronto Open.

The two-time Grand Slam winner is the 12th seed at the tournament, with her fellow competitor Coco Gauff wanting more events in Canada.

The former is in fine form going into the competition, having reached the quarter-finals of the Citi Open, losing to top seed Aryna Sabalenka.

Victoria Azarenka makes WTA history at the Toronto Open

Azarenka reacted as Qinwen Zheng won Olympic gold, but the Belarusian is now deserving of praise after her first round win in Canada.

She beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2, 6-2, becoming the first player to claim 150 straight-set wins at WTA-1000 events since the format’s introduction in 2009, as per OptaAce.

The figure excludes retirements, with legendary figure Serena Williams having claimed 117 throughout her career.

Can Victoria Azarenka finally win the US Open?

Many male and female tennis stars are in Canada to prepare for the US Open, with events taking place in Toronto and Montreal.

The men’s stars are in Montreal as they look to fine-tune their game for the fourth and final major of the year, with the women’s stars in Toronto.

Azarenka will undoubtedly be eyeing a lengthy stay in the competition, with the hard-court specialist winning both of her Grand Slam titles on that surface.

The former world number one has two Australian Open titles to her name, having also lost three US Open finals.

Azarenka lost twice to Williams in America, with her most recent final defeat coming against Naomi Osaka in 2020.
