The ATP Masters 1,000 is back in Canada to continue the rich history of the Montreal Open, so The Tennis Gazette covers all that you need to know about the tournament.

Ever since 1881, the top male tennis players from around the world have flown to Canada to prove their skills. Only Wimbledon and the US Open can also boast a longer history than the event, which currently welcomes the ATP Tour to Montreal and Toronto in alternating years.

It is the turn of the Montreal Open to stage the best ATP Tour players in 2024, with the best of the WTA Tour heading to the Toronto Open. The Montreal Open also offers a springboard into the US Open, with the final Grand Slam of 2024 to follow starting at the close of August.

Everything you need to know about the 2024 Montreal Open

Italy’s Jannik Skinner arrives at the 2024 Montreal Open as the defending ATP Masters 1,000 tour event winner in Canada. The world No1 secured his debut Masters 1,000 win in Toronto in 2023, and will now want to lay the foundations to go for a career-best run at the US Open.

But multiple big names are skipping the Montreal Open after representing their countries at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Lorenzo Musetti and beaten 2023 Toronto Open finalist Alex de Minaur have all chosen against playing at the Montreal Open.

Predictions for the 2024 Montreal Open

Our team of expert writers at The Tennis Gazette have predicted how they feel the Montreal Open will play out and who they believe is the favorite to win the ATP Masters 1,000 event…

Callum Davies: “Although Jannik Sinner might be the outstanding favorite going into this latest Masters 1,000 event, his absence from tournament-level tennis since his quarter-final exit at Wimbledon perhaps could provoke some rustiness.

“So, with that in mind, I’d back Daniil Medvedev to make a triumphant return to the hard courts with a win here, having already won the event once back in 2021.

“The Russian is a notoriously tricky player to face on this, his favourite surface by some distance, and his ability to prolong rallies could see him outlast Sinner should the two face, given the Italian has not played since Medvedev actually dumped him out in SW19.

“Buoyed from that win, but inspired given he is yet to actually win a title in 2024, I’m backing Medvedev to end his drought here in Montreal.”

Sammy France: “While Jannik Sinner’s return will undoubtedly make him the favorite, Daniil Medvedev’s historic 2019 run to the US Open final started here in Montreal. After defeating Sinner at Wimbledon, Medvedev looks ready to make a leap for the title.”

Peter Lynch: “Alexander Zverev continues his search for that elusive Grand Slam title. But he could end his drought at the US Open later this month, with a victory in Montreal set to be the perfect stepping stone.”

Lee Clarke: “This is a tricky one to call, with Jannik Sinner back in action after he was forced to withdraw from the Olympics. There will be no Novak Djokovic or Carlos Alcaraz at this one and with that in mind, the field is likely to be wide open.

“The smart money probably goes to the number one seed in Sinner, but I feel like I want to be different here. Daniil Medvedev is playing well at the moment, he reached the semi-final at Wimbledon and he knows his way around a hard court.

“The Russian is in the same half of the draw as Stefanos Tsitsipas and Sinner. but his game looks suited to Montreal and I’m going to go for him to get his hands on the trophy here.”
