Venus Williams was very encouraged by the performance of the American players at the US Open.
For the second successive year an American player reached the women’s final, while an American male reached the final for the first time since 2006.
Jessica Pegula took on Aryna Sabalenka in Saturday’s championship match, while Taylor Fritz faced Jannik Sinner in the men’s final.
Both players from the States came up short, but Venus Williams was happy with the progress made by her compatriots at the latest edition of the New York Grand Slam.

American tennis is in a boom period with five players from the States currently inside the ATP’s top 20.
On the other hand, three Americans are ranked inside the WTA’s top 10, while Danielle Collins sits just outside those spots at number 11.
To see some of these players perform so well at their home Slam pleased Venus and she believes more American players will have success at the US Open and other Grand Slams.
“It’s very invigorating for US tennis and obviously. We were so close, like knocking at the door. It was so exciting to watch and I’m hoping that an American will take home a title,” she told American talk show The View while promoting her new book ‘Strive: Eight Steps to Find Your Awesome’.
“Last year we had an American take home the title in Coco and that was so exciting it can happen again.”
How many US Open titles has Venus Williams won?
Williams has won seven Grand Slam titles, two of which came at the US Open.
The 43-year-old defeated the tournament’s top two seeded players Martina Hingis and Lindsay Davenport in the semi-finals and final to win her first title at Flushing Meadows in 2000.
She became the second woman after Steffi Graf in 1988 to win Wimbledon, the Olympics, and the US Open in the same season.
Williams successfully retained her title in 2001 and it included beating Kim Clijsters and Jennifer Capriati in the quarter-finals and semi-finals.
Williams’ opponent in the final was her sister Serena Williams, and defeated her younger sibling 6-2, 6-4 to win the fourth Grand Slam title of her career.
