Jessica Pegula had her dream run to the US Open final halted by the blistering force of Aryna Sabalenka.
It was a superb month on North American soil for Pegula, who claimed to handle the nerves well in her maiden grand slam final despite the Belarusian winning 7-5, 7-5.
Pegula reached the Cincinnati final a week after successfully defending her Canadian Open title, establishing herself among the favorites for the US Open.
And she delivered with a captivating run to the championship match, which included a stellar win over world number one Iga Swiatek.
However, it wasn’t meant to be as Sabalenka muscled her way past the American for her third grand slam title and first in New York.

Jessica Pegula reflects on US Open final vs Aryna Sabalenka
After an imposing run of form, Jessica Pegula has reestablished herself as the American number one and three in the WTA rankings.
The 30-year-old was hampered by injuries earlier in the year but bounced back to produce a stellar campaign on home soil.
It was always going to be an arduous task to overcome Sabalenka, who is regarded as the best hard-court player, in the final, but Pegula played her part in a tremendous battle that swung back and forth.
Reflecting on her recent performances, Pegula took to X: “What a crazy month. Super proud of what I’ve been able to string together the last few weeks.
“My first slam and so many other milestones. Ashe was an incredible atmosphere Saturday! Thanks for the incredible amount of support I’ve received the last few days & congrats to Aryna and her team.”
Pegula and Sabalenka hard-court rivalry is good for the game
The 2024 season has been largely dominated by the rivalry between Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka at the top of the WTA Tour.
The pair played back-to-back finals in Madrid and Rome, but have not contested a grand-slam match since 2022.

It is a gripping rivalry that has drawn in more eyes to the women’s game, though it is also refreshing to see Pegula and Sabalenka igniting a duel of their own on the hard courts in recent times.
Rivalries like these on the biggest stages, in the biggest finals are what the sport needs to grow and attract more viewers.
The American has lost their previous two meetings but there is little concern that she will have to wait too long before a shot at redemption.
