Although the main draw of the US Open is still a week away, qualifying has still brought out some eye-catching results.

Qualifying will take place alongside the new revamped US Open mixed doubles event, which has thrown up some eye-catching matches.

Despite playing in the final of the Cincinnati Open just yesterday, Iga Swiatek has suggested she is still playing US Open mixed doubles.

While Swiatek is definitely playing at the US Open, two former Grand Slam semifinalists are already out of the New York major.

Martina Trevisan and Tamara Zidansek lose in the first round of US Open qualifying

The first round of US Open qualifying got underway on Monday, August 18, when Tamara Zidansek and Martina Trevisan were both playing.

Zidansek and Trevisan are both former Roland Garros semifinalists, from 2021 and 2022 respectively, but have fallen down the WTA rankings since then and now have to play Grand Slam qualifying.

Despite their previous pedigree at major tournaments, this did not help them in the first round of US Open qualifying.

Zidansek won the first set of her match against Laura Pigossi, but she was unable to continue her momentum and lost in a gruelling three hour and 38 minute battle.

While Trevisan, who has recently returned from injury, suffered a straight sets defeat to Tatiana Prozorova.

Terence Atmane withdraws from US Open qualifying

There has also been a high-profile name exiting the men’s US Open qualifying draw, but not in the same way as Zidansek and Trevisan.

Terence Atmane had a breakthrough run at the US Open, reaching the semifinals before losing to Jannik Sinner.

The Frenchman has been rewarded with a new career-high ranking of world number 69, but his ranking at the cut-off for US Open direct entry was not high enough.

Another French player received a wildcard instead of Atmane, meaning that instead he would have to play qualifying.

However, it appears that the short turnaround was too much for Atmane, who has now decided to withdraw from US Open qualifying.

As a result, Atmane will now be replaced by Andrea Collarini, who will now play British player Jan Choinski instead.

Atmane’s next scheduled tournaments are in China, as he is entered into ATP Challenger events in Zhangjiagang and Shanghai.
