The Argentina Open has seen many iconic champions over the years as it holds its 28th edition in 2025.
Rafael Nadal, who dominated clay courts before retiring last year, won one of his 63 titles on the surface at the Buenos Aires tournament in 2015.
Some of the other more notable champions include Dominic Thiem, who also retired last year, Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, David Ferrer and Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Retirement will be a big theme at this year’s tournament, as 2021 champion and former top 10 player Diego Schwartzman bids farewell in front of his home crowd.
While Schwartzman is one of the more notable homegrown talents in recent years, there are also two other Argentinian names making headlines.

Francisco Cerundolo reacts to playing brother at the Argentina Open
Francisco Cerundolo is currently the Argentinian number one, and has been ranked as high as world number 19.
He is also a three-time title winner on the ATP Tour, and reached the final of the Argentina Open back in 2021.
Francisco also has a younger brother on the ATP Tour in Juan Manuel Cerundolo, who has a career-high ranking of world number 79.
Despite being younger by three years, Juan Manuel was actually the first of the Cerundolo brothers to win an ATP title, having done so at just at just 19-years-old on his main draw debut at the Cordoba Open in 2021.
Now lower down the rankings at world number 139, Juan Manuel had to come through qualifying before beating fellow qualifier and compatriot Roman Andres Burruchaga to reach the second round of the Argentina Open.
Following Francisco’s subsequent first round win, an eye-catching meeting between the two Cerundolo brothers has been confirmed.
Upon the confirmation of this matchup, Francisco posted a message on social media to express his pride at the upcoming occasion attached with a picture of them as children.
“I don’t know how many families can say that two brothers are playing in the round of 16 at their home ATP,” Francisco Cerundolo said on X (formerly known as Twitter). :Whatever happens tomorrow, we all win! It’s a pride to play night session at [Buenos Aires] Lawn Tennis [Club] @jmcerundolo Enjoy it.”
This was followed up by a quick response by his younger brother Juan Manuel, who joked that they can’t get angry on court.
“It’s not worth getting angry and swearing tomorrow (laughing face emojis),” Juan Manuel responded.
Although they have never played one another on the main ATP Tour before, Francisco won their only previous professional meeting that took place over three years ago at the Campinas Challenger in Brazil.
Other famous tennis brothers throughout history
One of the most famous sibling duos in history are the Williams sisters, who won 30 Grand Slam singles titles collectively.
The tennis icons also collected 14 doubles major titles together, and recently Serena Williams made an appearance at the Super Bowl.

There are also other tennis brother pairings like the Cerundolo brothers that have faced off against one another in history.
Andy and Jamie Murray are one of the most successful brother duos, having both held the world number one ranking in singles and doubles, respectively.
While they never played against one another in a professional setting, they were able to win two doubles titles together in Valencia (2010) and Tokyo (2011).
Jamie also partnered Andy in his final match at Wimbledon, where they lost in the first round to Rinky Hijikata and John Peers.
Despite the Murray brothers never competing against one, three other tennis brothers have in the form of the McEnroe brothers (John and Patrick), the Zverev brothers (Alexander and Mischa) and the Bryan brothers (Mike and Bob).
While the Bryan brothers dominated the doubles scene and collected more Grand Slam titles than any duo in history (16), they also competed against one another in the early stages of their professional career.
Alexander Zverev is the more successful brother in terms of accolades, but it is actually his older brother Mischa who won more of their matches.
While John McEnroe dominates the head-to-head against his younger brother Patrick McEnroe.
| Brothers | Head-to-head | Most recent meeting |
| McEnroe’s | 3-0 John McEnroe | John beat Patrick, 6-2 6-4 (Basel 1991) |
| Zverev’s | 2-1 Mischa Zverev | Alexander beat Mischa, 6-3 7-5 (Washington 2018) |
| Bryan’s | 2-1 Mike Bryan | Mike beat Bob, 6-3 6-4 (Armonk Challenger 2000) |
