Gauff was heavily criticized after she lamented American support overseas, but doubles legend Rennae Stubbs has now jumped to her defense.
She wrote on X: “Coco Gauff is literally one of the classiest people our sport has to offer in so many ways.
“She works hard, she’s incredibly respectful to everyone around her, including her opponents, the media & fans etc.
“What she said wasn’t wrong, just a truthful comment from a truthful person.”

Stubbs’ analysis of Gauff is absolutely spot on, with the latter having definitely been initially misunderstood regarding her comments.
Having claimed American fans are the “worst” at supporting overseas, she was forced to clarify that she is grateful for any and all support she receives.
World number four Gauff deserves praise for simply speaking up in the first place, with the 21-year-old showing maturity well beyond her years.
But that is nothing new from the American superstar, who is already well respected in and out of the tennis world.

Honest communication is, however, much rarer in tennis and sport in general, but not when it comes to Gauff.
She now needs to forget about the outside noise ahead of her latest United Cup clash, where she is set to take on Greece’s Maria Sakkari.
The American star, who was the MVP as the USA won the 2025 United Cup, is also ready to play another doubles match if required.
