Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek top the WTA rankings in the latter stages of the 2025 season.

Sabalenka won the US Open last month, winning her first major title of the year after losing in the final of both the Australian Open and Roland Garros.

The Belarusian was largely unchallenged by her biggest rival, but Swiatek has won Wimbledon, the Cincinnati Open and the Korea Open in a resurgent second half of the 2025 season.

Now, with both players at the same tournament once again, former world number one Tracy Austin has revealed which player she thinks has had the better year.

Although they have won the same number of Grand Slams in 2025, Sabalenka has also won the Miami Open, Madrid Open and the Brisbane International.

Due to her dominance on the WTA Tour, Austin was confident that Sabalenka has had a better season than Swiatek when asked the question on Tennis Channel.

“Without a doubt it’s Sabalenka,” said Austin. “Sabalenka’s won four titles, so she’s won more than Swiatek. Swiatek has won three, kind of come at the end of the year.

“Also four other finals, has gone deeper in the majors, she has been the most successful player, most wins and I think that’s why it was so important for her to cap it off with that US Open title. But it was good to see Swiatek start to play better.”

Former US Open finalist Pam Shriver added, “I think it’s fun to see how much it means to Swiatek, remember when she dominated as number one for a while after [Ash] Barty retired it really wasn’t a race at the end, she was dominating. But this one, let’s just wait and see.”

Can Iga Swiatek still overtake Aryna Sabalenka to become world number one this year?

Sabalenka has been world number one since October last year, but she has not quite confirmed her status as year-end number one just yet.

With just two tournaments remaining on both of their schedules, Sabalenka leads Swiatek by a significant 2,457 points.

However, that is not as big of a lead as it looks on the surface, as Sabalenka has 1,000 more points to defend than Swiatek until the end of the year.

That will begin at the Wuhan Open, where Sabalenka will play her first tournament since the US Open after missing the WTA 1000 event in Beijing.

Not only will she be looking to solidify her position as world number one, but Sabalenka will also be looking to make WTA history in Wuhan.
