Coco Gauff has enjoyed another strong season in 2024, reaching two Grand Slam semi-finals and becoming world number two for the first time.

Gauff won the US Open in 2023 and has built on her first Major title with a solid year on the WTA Tour, which has seen her settle in as world number three.

The 20-year-old enjoyed success at the Grand Slams in 2024, as Gauff reached the semi-finals of the French Open, losing out to eventual winner Iga Swiatek.

Her form had been strong but Gauff made the decision to change coaches, swapping out Brad Gilbert for Matt Daly earlier this year.

It didn’t take long for her new coaching setup to pay dividends, as Gauff won her biggest title of the season just months after Daly came on board

Gauff won the China Open, this October, beating Karolina Muchova 6-1, 6-3 in the final, to take home her second career WTA 1000 title.

Not long after however, Gauff’s Achilles heel reappeared, something that one tennis legend has had his say on.

Tim Henman believes Coco Gauff ‘100%’ has a problem with her serve

Gauff has struggled with double faults in 2024, and the problem reared its head at this year’s Wuhan Open, where Gauff double-faulted a season record 21 times in defeat to Aryna Sabalenka.

Former world number four Tim Henman was asked on the Sky Sports Tennis podcast if he believes Gauff’s serve is an issue.

“100% It’s a struggle right now,” he said.

“Technically it’s a pretty extreme grip and when you look at where the ball toss is on her second serve and where her weight is going it’s not ideal.”

The British legend believes that the rest of Gauff’s game could be enough to make up for her serving problems however.

“But I think it doesn’t need to be an amazing weapon,” said Henman.

“If it’s solid and reliable, with her athletic ability and her backhand I think her forehand will become more solid.”

Henman went on to say whether he believes Gauff will pick up another Grand Slam title to add to her US Open trophy.

“She has won a slam and I think she can and will win more slams in the future,” he said.

How does Coco Gauff’s serve compare to the rest of the WTA Tour?

Whilst Henman believes that Gauff is struggling with her serve, do the stats back his opinions up?

Gauff leads the WTA Tour for the number of double faults by some margin, with second-placed Marta Kostyuk over 30 behind.

This marks a sharp decline for the 20-year-old who was ranked 18th for double faults in 2023 with just over 200.

Giving up that many free points to her opponents is something that should be very concerning for Gauff, and addressing that in 2025 will no doubt help her in her pursuit of a second Grand Slam title.

The American won her first match at the WTA Finals against Jessica Pegula, and will return to court to face off against Iga Swiatek on Tuesday.
