Coco Gauff knows exactly what she needs to do in order to reassert herself as a huge threat on the WTA Tour.

The American has struggled throughout the summer having failed to go beyond the quarter-finals in any of her last five events.

After Gauff failed to defend her US Open title, she dropped down to number six in the world rankings behind Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula and Jasmine Paolini.

But she commences the Asian swing with a clean slate after parting ways with coach Brad Gilbert and adding Matt Daly to her team.

Coco Gauff has started life with her new coach with a victory after overcoming Clara Burel in straight sets at the China Open.

What did Coco Gauff say she needs to keep doing after winning at the China Open?

Gauff began her first match since the US Open in shaky fashion as two double faults led to the loss of her serve.

However, she battled back to open up a 4-2 lead, but Burel won the next three games and earned a set point, which Gauff was able to save, before holding serve and breaking in the next game.

She needed four set points of her own before eventually clinching the first set. The 20-year-old needed just the one break of serve in the second set before securing a 7-5, 6-3 win.

Despite making several errors at times, especially in the first set, Gauff is working on trying to be more aggressive, and she says that is how she needs to keep playing.

“Clara, she’s tough to play. I played her at Indian Wells this year; it’s a tough match but I was happy to get through,” she said via the WTA website.

“I think I stayed aggressive the whole match, even when I was making some mistakes. But I think this is the way I have to play, and I know as I continue to get more comfortable, that will get better.”

Who is Coco Gauff’s next opponent at the China Open?

Gauff booked her spot in the next round of the China Open where she will face British number one Katie Boulter.

The 28-year-old reached a career-high ranking of number 27 in March and has established herself as one of the WTA Tour’s more consistent players.

This is something Gauff alluded to when speaking about her next opponent and knows she will need to deliver a good performance.

“I think [Boulter’s] been a completely new player this year,” Gauff said. “She’s playing some great tennis, so it’s going to be a tough match. I’ll just try to stay solid the whole time.”
