Wimbledon is just around the corner, but many eyes have turned to the US Open after the lineup for the new mixed doubles tournament was announced.

Former US Open finalist Kei Nishikori has withdrawn from Wimbledon, the next Grand Slam in the calendar.

The grass court tournament gets underway in London later this month, with the French Open having just concluded in Paris.

ATP stars Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have ensured tennis is in safe hands after their French Open final, which was won by the Spaniard.

Coco Gauff meanwhile won the women’s French Open title, defeating WTA number one Aryna Sabalenka in the final.

Tennis fans shocked after US Open announce 2025 mixed doubles line-up

All four players will be eager to enjoy lengthy runs at Wimbledon, but many tennis fans are currently focused on the US Open mixed doubles pairings.

It includes Alcaraz with Emma Raducanu and Naomi Osaka with Nick Kyrgios, with one fan reacting on X: “This is an absolutely absurd line-up for a Grand Slam mixed doubles tournament.”

A second commented: “This is a such middle finger to the doubles specialists, but ngl this line-up lowkey eats. I’m gonna watch.”

A third shocked fan said: “Half of these make perfect sense and then you have ‘Jannik Sinner & Emma Navarro’ and ‘Jack Draper and Qinwen Zheng’.”

A fourth wrote: “Either this will be the most famous mixed doubles ever (because of the star power of players) or it’ll be a pointless exhibition because of possible lack of seriousness from singles players for a doubles event. No in between!”

A fifth fan said: “There are literally 3 maybe 4 teams on here I would have even thought about putting together what,” with another noting: “Aryna and Grigor [Dimitrov], Emma and Carlos, Paola [Badosa] and Stefanos [Tsitsipas], Iga [Swiatek] and Casper [Ruud]. Is this a fanfic.”

Excitement and intrigue understandable ahead of crazy US Open mixed doubles event

It truly is one of the craziest lineups that any tennis tournament has ever produced, with the excitement from fans absolutely understandable.

As noticed by many fans, some of the pairings are certainly on the surprising side, but others make perfect sense.

Tennis couple Badosa and Tsitsipas should enjoy a fantastic chemistry on the court, with Taylor Fritz and Elena Rybakina reuniting after winning the Eisenhower Cup on the eve of Indian Wells earlier this year.

Alcaraz and Raducanu meanwhile is a very intriguing pairing, as is the iconic duo of Naomi Osaka and Nick Kyrgios.

More chemistry should arrive between many compatriots, with American duo Frances Tiafoe and Madison Keys linking up, along with Jessica Pegula and Tommy Paul.

Similar partnerships will take place between Russians Daniil Medvedev and Mirra Andreeva, and Italians Jasmine Paolini and Lorenzo Musetti.
