Taylor Fritz has secured his place in the fourth round of the US Open after beating Francisco Comesana in straight sets.

Fritz is among the Americans impressing lately, with the world number 12 set to face Casper Ruud in the last 16 at Flushing Meadows.

Ruud is the US Open eighth seed, and faces 12th seed Fritz after surviving a huge scare against Shang Juncheng.

The Norwegian went two sets down in his third round clash at the US Open, but recovered to win 6-7(1-7), 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, 6-1.

Fritz meanwhile defeated Argentine Comesana 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 as he continues his search for a first-ever Grand Slam title.

Taylor Fritz equals 2003 Andre Agassi record after his latest US Open win

The American has only ever made it to the quarter-finals in major tournaments, reaching that stage at the 2023 US Open before losing to Novak Djokovic.

Quarter-final spots were also secured earlier this year at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, either side of his fourth round exit at the French Open.

His latest victory now represents a superb achievement, with Fritz becoming the first American man to reach the second week of all four majors in a year since Andre Agassi in 2003, as per ESPN.

Fritz has impressively not dropped a set in this year’s US Open, having made it past Camilo Ugo Carabelli and Matteo Berrettini in rounds one and two respectively.

But the 12th seed now faces his toughest test yet against Ruud, who lost the 2022 US Open final to Rafael Nadal.

Fritz is, however, full of confidence, and is certainly in high spirits ahead of his next match at his home major.

The American took time to respond to ESPN following the emergence of the Agassi record, writing on X: “Love the shoutout from ESPN but you follow my gf and not me on Insta so we have beef.”

But Ruud certainly has the upper hand in terms of his head-to-head record against Fritz, having won both of their meetings so far, with the latest coming in the fourth round of the French Open earlier this summer.
