Coco Gauff is all change for another US Open, a tournament she won in 2023 for her maiden Grand Slam success.

Gauff has parted ways with Matt Daly ahead of the US Open, as well as hiring biomechanics coach Gavin MacMillan.

MacMillan was spotted working on Gauff’s serve in the lead-up to the event, which is now underway in New York.

Gauff is the third seed at the fourth and final Grand Slam of the season, and faces Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round.

The American enters her home Grand Slam with a 35-12 win-loss record in 2025, with one WTA title won so far.

Sam Querrey and John Isner discuss Coco Gauff firing Matt Daly before the US Open

That arrived at the French Open, but much of the current discussion about the 21-year-old has involved her coaching setup.

Speaking of her decision to split with Daly and hire MacMillan the week before a Grand Slam, former player Sam Querrey said on the Nothing Major Show: “I am all for it. The serve was struggling.

“She is so young. She is just looking more down the road. Matt crushed it, she won a Grand Slam and is three in the race. You can make the argument both ways.”

His fellow former professional John Isner added: “This wasn’t just a random hire. [Aryna] Sabalenka worked with him.

“And he’s not just a tennis expert, he is a biomechanics expert. He helped Aryna and she would admit that. She is pretty damn good.

“I like the move. I don’t necessarily understand firing Matt Daly, I don’t think he was the one who made her serve good or cr—.”

What is Coco Gauff’s history at the US Open?

It certainly is an interesting time to make such a significant change, but Gauff clearly has her reasons and they must be respected.

She enjoyed great success alongside Daly, but the 21-year-old undoubtedly won’t want her Grand Slam titles list to end with just two.

Gauff is already a 10-time champion on the WTA Tour, and has reached as high as second in the world rankings.

But she will undoubtedly now be a target for world number one Sabalenka, who Gauff defeated in the finals of the 2023 US Open and 2025 French Open.
