Coco Gauff’s US Open preparations took a turn on Wednesday as she split with her coach days before her opening match.

When Gauff lost to Emma Navarro in the fourth round of the 2024 US Open, she made a big coaching change, replacing Brad Gilbert with Matt Daly.

The pair immediately found success together, as Gauff won the China Open and WTA Finals before the end of the year.

Carrying that momentum forward to 2025, Gauff won the French Open to clinch her second Grand Slam, and her first with Daly as coach.

However, in a shocking turn of events, Gauff and Daly have now split, just three months removed from their Roland Garros triumph.

Offering up his thoughts on the decision, Daly has given his honest opinion on the world number three.

Matt Daly ‘only has good things to say’ about Coco Gauff despite split

Speaking to ‘Bounces‘ in the aftermath of their split, Daly briefly commented on his experience working with the young American star.

“Only have good things to say about Coco [Gauff], enjoyed working with her,” he said.

The 45-year-old also confirmed that the split had occurred ‘recently’, but didn’t go into any more specifics.

Gauff has yet to weigh in with her thoughts on the end of their relationship, although she is likely to do so over the next few days.

She has also reportedly split with secondary coach J.C. Faurel, although the pair were spotted training together in New York recently.

Reports seem to suggest Gauff will replace Daly and Faurel with biomechanics expert Gavin MacMillan, who previously enjoyed success working alongside world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

Working alongside Daly, Gauff competed in 17 WTA tournaments, winning four, including the 2025 French Open.

Enjoying as much success together as they did, it seems puzzling to see Gauff and Daly split with a Grand Slam tournament right around the corner.

Whatever the reasons are, Gauff will need to refocus as she searches for a third major title at Flushing Meadows.

Can Coco Gauff still win the US Open after Matt Daly split?

At just 21 years of age, Gauff has already established herself as one of the best players in the women’s game.

Regardless of form or circumstance, Gauff will always be a contender at any event she chooses to attend.

Yes, splitting with her coach on the eve of the US Open doesn’t seem like the ideal preparation for a Grand Slam, but you still wouldn’t want to count her out.

The American star has enjoyed several strong results at Flushing Meadows over the years, including her remarkable win in 2023.

Travelling to New York as the number-six seed two years ago, Gauff was excellent throughout, capping off a brilliant tournament with a three-set win over Sabalenka to clinch the title.

She will return in 2025 as the third seed, and realistically… the third favorite, behind Sabalenka and the in-form Iga Swiatek.

Whether she can upset the three-time and six-time Grand Slam champions remains to be seen, but you certainly won’t want to miss any of the action.

The 2025 US Open is scheduled to begin on Sunday, August 24.
