The ATP Tour now heads into the clay-court season, having just finished the Sunshine Double at the Miami Open.
Jakub Mensik has been congratulated after winning the Miami Open, having beaten Novak Djokovic in the final.
In the previous ATP Masters 1000 hard-court event, Jack Draper triumphed over Holger Rune in the Indian Wells final.
Both finals where all-European affairs, with American men failing to emerge victorious in their home tournaments.
The Indian Wells last four was also without an American man, before Taylor Fritz managed to reach that stage of the Miami Open.
Sam Querrey shocked by lack of American men’s success
And that has created a discussion between former American professionals Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson, with the former saying on the Nothing Major Show: “If you would have told me through the first three months of the year, there has been I don’t know, 15 tournaments around the world, maybe more, 20, that we would not have a title from an American I would have been shocked based on how many good Americans we have right now. The guys have not won a title. Not that they’re playing poorly or not doing well.”
Johnson then said: “It is surprising but there are two or three guys in the top 10 at the start of the year. We have guys knocking on the door left and right. We all know it.
“When you get to that US swing, back in the day when you had Dallas, Memphis, San Jose, New York, the Americans were winning those events pretty handily.
“It didn’t have to be us but go back to Andy and Mardy and James and those guys as well and we were very comfortable in the States, so it is a bit surprising so far to not have any of these guys with the title.
“I don’t see that as an issue going forward, I think they will figure it out in the next couple of months but I would have guessed somebody would have taken the title in Del Ray or Dallas, one of those events, and it’s just a bummer because we all want to root for these guys.”
Steve Johnson says American women enjoy being more successful than American men
Fritz has predicted an American men’s Grand Slam champion, with Andy Roddick representing the last such player.
The former world number one lifted the US Open trophy in 2003, but since then his compatriots have suffered a major drought.

In contrast, their female counterparts already have a 2025 winner, with Madison Keys clinching the Australian Open title.
Keys is one of three Americans in the WTA Tour top 10, with Fritz the only American man in that position on the ATP Tour.
Sharing his take on the situation, Querrey said: “The women in America have done way better than the men in the last 20 years.

“And now the men are catching up but the women are like we have titles this year from Keys, [McCartney] Kessler, [Emma] Navarro and [Jessica] Pegula. Do you think the American women like the fact that they do a little better than the men?”
Johnson replied: “I think they do! They have like 22 Slams in the last two decades, maybe more. And we have none. They have dominated.”
