Novak Djokovic was very excited after hearing what Nick Kyrgios had to say about his tennis comeback.
The Australian has played just one match since August 2022 following a plethora of injuries, with the most recent being wrist surgery.
Though he has made himself at home in the BBC commentary booth at Wimbledon, the 29-year-old is itching to get back on the court and compete with the top players in the world.
Djokovic has been helping Kyrgios get his rhythm back by participating in some practice sessions with him during the fortnight.
In fact, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist is so keen to start playing again he may be back even sooner than we think.
What did Nick Kyrgios tell Novak Djokovic?
The relationship between Djokovic and Kyrgios has grown exponentially over the last few years. The pair have spoken very highly of one another and contested the Wimbledon 2022 final which the Serbian won in four sets.
Djokovic gave reporters an update on Kyrgios’ injury recovery and when the Australian Open doubles champion wants to be back on tour.
“I can tell you that I think a few days ago when we practice, actually yesterday I think it was, he hit a really good serve and he said I might come back for the US Open,” he said.
“I don’t know if he was joking about it or not. But let me tell you, he is hitting the ball as good as ever, really. And serving he said that the wrist bothers him most with the serve but he has been increasing the load and intensity and speed.
“He is not going for full pace or full strength serve but he’s close to that. He is very positive. It is nice to see him full of life and energy. I think the return is near but it’s hard to say really.
“He will not know how his wrist will react until he plays a tournament. I hope he will come back personally and everyone in tennis hopes he can come back, as we definitely need him on the tour.”

Novak Djokovic discusses what his relationship with Nick Kyrgios is really like
Djokovic and Kyrgios now have a good relationship but this was not always the case.
In 2019 the former World number 13 said he “couldn’t stand” the 24-time Grand Slam champion and also branded him a “tool” and claimed he had an “obsession” with being liked.
But things changed when Kyrgios defended Djokovic following his deportation from Australia in 2022 after refusing to take the coronavirus vaccine. The pair now get on very well and Djokovic expressed how vital Kyrgios is for the game.
“He is very positive. It is nice to see him full of life and energy. He is an extremely important guy for our sport. He brings new fans,” the tennis legend added.
“It is a little bit of bromance we are having in the last few years, considering we really didn’t like each other at all for many years! But now we get along very well and he’s very nice with my kids, he played with them.”
