Mirra Andreeva makes tennis history after beating Clara Tauson in the third round of Indian Wells

Mirra Andreeva has continued her superb run of form by reaching the last 16 of Indian Wells, where she meets Elena Rybakina.

Jessica Pegula has been impressed by Andreeva, who lifted the trophy at the Dubai Tennis Championships last month.

Andreeva has been inspired by Roger Federer, with the 17-year-old already a two-time WTA Tour champion.

She has also broken the top 10 in the world rankings, and became the youngest WTA 1000 champion ever with her recent win in Dubai.

Fellow rising star Clara Tauson was her victim in that final, with the Dane now on the receiving end of another Andreeva defeat at Indian Wells.

The Russian star beat Tauson 6-3, 6-0 in their third round match in California, setting up a round of 16 clash with Rybakina as well as making tennis history.

As per OptaAce, Andreeva is the youngest player to win nine of her first 10 seasonal matches in WTA 1000 events.

That is since the format was introduced in 2009, with the ninth seed rewarded with a tough test against the seventh seed and 2023 champion for her efforts.

Handed a bye in round one of Indian Wells, Andreeva hit the ground running with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Varvara Gracheva in round two.

It continues a very strong 2025 season for the teenager so far, although she will be wary of potentially facing world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Sabalenka beat Andreeva at both the Brisbane International and Australian Open in January, although the Russian did beat the Belarusian at Roland Garros last year.

But the teenager certainly has momentum on her side in California, with Andreeva now also the youngest player to reach the women’s singles round of 16 at Indian Wells since Amanda Anisimova in 2018, as per OptaAce.
