Mats Wilander thinks there has been a change in Novak Djokovic’s game which may have impacted some of his results in 2024.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion has carved out a fabulous career that many regard as the greatest of all time.
At the age of 37 Djokovic is still contending for the top honours and challenging the best players on a regular basis.
But despite his impressive level of play for a player who has been on tour for the better part of 20 years, father time catches up with everyone and Wilander may have spotted the first signs of that happening to Djokovic.
What does Mats Wilander think is different about Novak Djokovic?
By his usual levels of greatness, Djokovic has endured a difficult 2024 season. He has yet to win a title and has reached just one final, which came at Wimbledon against Carlos Alcaraz.
He suffered some surprise defeats this year and has looked more fallible on the court than fans are sued to seeing. During an appearance on the Roland Garros Courtside conversations podcast, Wilander explained why this might be the case.
“As we can tell with Novak Djokovic, is he as intense these days as he was maybe five or six years ago? I say no,” the Swede said while he made a comparison between Djokovic now and several years ago.
“When he’s playing matches I say there’s a little bit of a lack of concentration at times and that’s a natural way to go and I think, it happens to everybody at some point it’s just that he has pushed it to his late 30s.”

Where is Novak Djokovic playing next?
After Djokovic suffered a comprehensive defeat to Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final, he is now focused on trying to win an Olympic gold medal for the first time.
He has come close on multiple occasions and is now presented with what might be his final opportunity to become Olympic champion.
Tennis at the 2024 Olympic Games is due to commence on Saturday July 27 at Roland Garros, the home of the French Open Grand Slam, where Djokovic tore his meniscus.
After losing the Wimbledon final Djokovic aims to be at his peak as he goes in search of the one prize that has eluded him throughout his career.
“The Olympic Games and U.S. Open are the two big goals for the rest of the year for me,” Djokovic said. “I’m hoping I can be at my best at those two tournaments. That’s all I can say right now.”
