Jannik Sinner could already be considering withdrawing from the Madrid Open according to his coach.
Sinner is bidding to overtake Carlos Alcaraz as world number one at the Monte Carlo Masters this week.
The Italian is currently on a collision course to meet Alcaraz in the final, which would be the first time Sinner plays his biggest rival this year.
However, after Sinner pulled out of the doubles tournament in Monte Carlo, one of his coaches Simone Vagnozzi has cast doubts over his participation at the Madrid Open.

Simone Vagnozzi suggests Jannik Sinner may not play the Madrid Open
Vagnozzi has been part of Sinner’s team since February 2022, and coaches him alongside Darren Cahill.
The 42-year-old is with Sinner at the Monte Carlo Masters, where Vagnozzi has spoken to Sky Sports Italy about the upcoming schedule.
Will Jannik Sinner win the French Open?
While Vagnozzi declared that the Madrid Open is on Sinner’s calendar, he suggested that it will depend on what happens at the Monte Carlo Masters, speaking about the mental toll two-week ATP 1000 tournaments can have on his player.
“The clay-court programming was decided independently before the American tournaments. We are quite flexible with the calendar,” said Vagnozzi. “Naturally yes, it was decided earlier. Now we’ll see how the tournament goes here.
“Madrid is in our calendar for the moment — we’ll see how Jannik arrives. On the physical side I don’t think there are doubts about his fitness. We did a long preparation between Doha and Indian Wells, so the tank is nicely full.
“It’s more a mental question than physical because these two-week tournaments mean you’re basically on the grind for a month. We have to find the right balance between when you’re confident and want to play, and when it’s right to stop and recover.”
If Sinner does decide to skip the Madrid Open then it could open an opportunity for Alcaraz, who has no points to defend in the Spanish capital.

Sinner has only made three previous appearances at the Madrid Open, and he is yet to surpass the quarterfinals.
The Italian reached the last-eight in Madrid in 2024, before Sinner was forced to withdraw due to a hip injury.
This is the only tournament since the start of 2024 where neither Sinner nor Alcaraz have won the title when both playing.

As a result of Sinner’s three-month ban from tennis, he was unable to play the Madrid Open last year.
It is unclear as to whether Sinner will play the Madrid Open this year, which begins on April 22, but his current focus is on winning the Monte Carlo Masters and returning to the top of the ATP rankings.
