Jannik Sinner gives his opinion on Alex de Minaur’s performance against him in the China Open semifinal

Jannik Sinner has made his way into yet another ATP Tour final after beating Alex de Minaur at the China Open.

Sinner battled through injury to overcome De Minaur, winning their semifinal encounter in Beijing 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

De Minaur received praise from Sinner before their tie at the China Open, which represents the Italian’s first event since the US Open.

Sinner also reached the final in New York earlier this month, but was beaten by fierce rival Carlos Alcaraz in four sets.

Alcaraz also beat Sinner in the final of the 2024 China Open, with the latter now set to fight Learner Tien for this year’s title.

Sinner has first analysed his latest win, having been asked afterwards what made the difference in the second set, and how important the first couple of games in the third set were when he saved break points.

He commented: “Yeah, was a key moment for sure in the third set. When you break and hold serve, it’s good. Then I tried to stay a bit more aggressive, which worked very well in the third set.

“But in the second set he had some chances. Couldn’t use them before. Then I had my chances. I couldn’t use them.

“It was a very even match. He was playing great tennis. I feel like we both were playing some great tennis. Was very physical.

“All things considered, I’m very happy about today’s level and match. Yeah, small ups and downs, which is normal. Generally talking, I’m very happy.”

It was indeed a roller-coaster match between Sinner and De Minaur, much to the delight of the China Open crowd.

And while the Australian certainly challenged the Italian, he ultimately fell short of finally breaking his duck in their hugely one-sided rivalry.

The pair have now met 11 times on the ATP Tour, with Sinner winning every single time, although he did withdraw from their ATP Masters 1000 Paris meeting in 2023.

Sinner and Tien meanwhile are yet to meet, with the latter having just reached his first career final in China.

The 19-year-old American is the second-youngest finalist in the history of the event behind Rafael Nadal, and has reached the last two after overcoming Daniil Medvedev.

Veteran Medvedev did, however, retire hurt during their meeting, although the score was 5-7, 7-5, 4-0 in favour of Tien.

Tien, who boasts a 7-5 record against top 20 players, also knocked the Russian out of the Australian Open earlier this season.
