Jannik Sinner just missed out on a maiden clay court Grand Slam title after losing the French Open final to Carlos Alcaraz.

Sinner loved the atmosphere against Alcaraz, despite losing their latest battle 4-6, 6-7(4-7), 6-4, 7-6(7-3), 7-6(10-2).

Mats Wilander was blown away by Alcaraz and Sinner, who played on Court Philippe-Chatrier for five hours and 29 minutes.

The Spaniard came from two sets down to secure the title, having also managed to save three championship points against ATP number one Sinner.

He successfully defended his French Open title, with Alcaraz having also lifted the trophy in 2024 after beating Alexander Zverev in the final.

“I’m a person who expects a lot from myself so it’s not an easy time,” said the world number one. “But it’s simple, in the other sense, these things happen and I think I’m a person who always tries to see the positive things and negative things and works on them.

“Now I need some of my time, I need to take a few days off to prepare myself as best as possible and then obviously be ready for Wimbledon, which will be the next goal. It’s not the time of the season for wasting time, but I need a few days before starting something new.”

The ruthless tennis schedule now shifts focus to the grass-court season, with Wimbledon already starting at the end of this month.

Sinner will, however, be taking a deserved rest before then, in a bid to recover both physically and mentally.

It was a gruelling match between him and Alcaraz, and was likely the first of many such Grand Slam finals between the pair.

They gave everything they had for the French Open fans, who will remember their battle for the rest of their lives.

Sinner will, however, be disappointed to have thrown away not only a two-set lead, but also three championship points.

And the former allowed Alcaraz to achieve a career first, having previously never won a best-of-five match from two sets down, as per OptaAce.

He truly is the five-set champion, and is quickly becoming the Roland Garros champion with back-to-back titles.

There is, however, an extremely long way to go if he plans to emulate his compatriot Rafael Nadal, who boasts a record 14 titles in Paris.
