Jack Draper was involved in a controversial incident with Daniil Medvedev during his quarterfinal match at Indian Wells.

Draper was adjudged to have hindered Medvedev after he made a slight movement of his arm during a crucial point in the second set when he thought the ball had gone out.

There has been a big reaction to this incident, with Aryna Sabalenka calling for a tennis rule to change as a result.

After having some time to reflect on the incident, Draper’s coach Jamie Delgado has revealed what he really thinks about it.

Jamie Delgado claims ‘the wrong decision’ was made with Jack Draper and Daniil Medvedev incident

Delgado became Draper’s coach last year during his time away from the sport due to a bone injury in his arm, following his split from James Trotman.

Due to the lengthy period of time Draper was out of competition, Indian Wells was just Delgado’s second ATP tournament coaching his fellow Brit.

Following his run to the quarterfinals, Delgado decided to open a question and answer on his Instagram as they now head to Florida for the Miami Open.

One of the questions asked Delgado what he thought of the much talked about hindrance call.

Delgado responded by claiming that it was the ‘wrong decision’, but suggested that he did not think it was the reason Draper lost the match.

“Was the wrong decision but it’s all good…Daniil deserved to win yesterday regardless,” said Delgado.

Jamie Delgado responds when asked if Jack Draper can return to the top 10 by the French Open

Despite Draper beating Novak Djokovic en route to reaching the Indian Wells quarterfinals, he will actually now drop down the rankings as he was the defending champion.

Draper will now drop outside the top 25 in the ATP rankings, subsequently losing his status of British number one to Cameron Norrie.

This is of little surprise due to Draper’s inactivity on tour in recent months, and Delgado was asked if he thinks his player can return to the top 10 before the French Open this year.

Delgado replied by explaining that this is not something that is on his mind for Draper right now, “Tbh (To be honest) not thinking about that at all…Good to be back and trying to get bit better each day and closer to where [we] want to be.”

Draper has 960 more ranking points to defend before the French Open this year, and 1460 points to defend until the end of 2026.

The Briton now has a big opportunity to start climbing back up the rankings at the Miami Open, where Draper lost his only match last year and is only defending 10 points.

Draper has only ever won two of his six previous matches at the Miami Open, and he will hope to improve on that this year when the men’s singles main draw gets underway on Wednesday, March 18.
