Iga Swiatek has signalled her intentions for the new season by really impressing at the 2025 United Cup.
Swiatek secured a record 10th United Cup singles win as she helped Poland reach the final once more in Australia.
But for the second successive year, Swiatek and Poland lost in the United Cup final, this time to the USA after last year’s German heartache.
In another negative, Swiatek took a medical time out against Coco Gauff, with that worrying situation coming just before the Australian Open.
Swiatek has been critical of the WTA schedule, although a ban for a failed drugs test was the reason behind her missing a key period of the 2024 season, rather than injury.

Iga Swiatek offers ‘perfect solution’ for WTA schedule problem
Still, the Pole remains an advocate for WTA change, having been asked on the Tennis Insider Club podcast how easy the tennis lifestyle is for her, needing to travel and compete regularly.
“I like it,” said Swiatek. “I think it would be easier on us if it was nine months instead of 11. That would be a perfect solution, I would say.
“Overall I love this. When I am home for too long I want to go somewhere but this season is long. You can feel it at the end, it is hard to be motivated all the time.
“I think it’s even impossible to be motivated all the time, even when your goals are the highest. I like the intensity but if it’s like 11 months out of 12 in the year, sometimes you get tough moments for sure.
“This is something we need to adjust to. For now I think I have been pretty good at it but I don’t understand how we got to this point where we have to play for 11 months.

“Also not playing some events, I feel like a couple of years ago it was just about planning and everything but when you are top five and you are not going to play Billie Jean King Cup or national events, there are a lot of people disappointed.
“There are also mandatory tournament rules. It makes it impossible to make decisions as easy decisions, just planning-wise. Now there is more pressure to play everything.”
What is the current WTA schedule and top 10?
The 2025 season has already been extremely busy, with plenty of WTA stars in action as they prepare for the Australian Open.
Swiatek and Gauff headlined the United Cup for Poland and the USA respectively, while Aryna Sabalenka took on the Brisbane International.
The world number one lifted the trophy, while former number one Naomi Osaka made it to the final of the ASB Classic in Auckland.
The calendar now continues with the Adelaide International and Hobart International, WTA 500 and WTA 250 events respectively.
Melbourne Park then welcomes the WTA players for the Australian Open, the first of the four Grand Slams of 2025.

| 3 | Coco Gauff | 20 | 21 | 6888 |

Incidentally, world number two Swiatek has played the joint-fewest tournaments (17) based on the current top 10 rankings, level with Barbora Krejcikova.
But the Pole was forced to miss one month due to her positive test for trimetazidine, with her ban having ended on 4 December.
