Holger Rune is hoping to move on from what happened to him at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Rune impressed at Indian Wells, reaching his first final at the Californian Masters 1000 tournament before losing to Jack Draper.

However, since then he has suffered back-to-back losses, that includes Rune retiring from his first round match at the Monte Carlo Masters against Nuno Borges.

Rune has now revealed the problem was that meant that he could no longer continue playing anymore.

Holger Rune reveals what forced him to retire at the Monte Carlo Masters

It has been a quick turnaround for the Dane, who is now in Barcelona for the upcoming ATP 500 tournament.

Ahead of main draw action getting underway, Rune was asked about his retirement in Monte Carlo and told press that he had been suffering from food poisoning.

“In Monte Carlo, I suffered from food poisoning,” said Rune. I love the tournament, it was just really bad luck. It was super complicated for me, as were the days after.

“I returned to training a couple of days ago and it wasn’t easy, but I’m happy to be back on the court, feeling good in my body. That’s a good sign.”

This is not the first time that food poisoning has hampered him this year, with Rune also retiring in Acapulco due to a similar issue.

When continuing to talk about these issues he has been facing, the Rune admitted that it has been annoying, but he is hoping to learn from it ahead of the Barcelona Open.

“It’s quite annoying, but I think you can learn from those situations,” said Rune. “I did some tests afterward to see what foods I should eat and what I should avoid.

“Maybe it’s just bad luck, but it’s very annoying, especially in a tournament like Monaco, where I’ve been good and I enjoy playing. I’m trying to stay focused on the next goal, playing in Barcelona.”

Holger Rune’s Potential run to the Barcelona Open title

With the Barcelona Open where Rune now has his sights, he will be looking ahead to his first round match with soon to be retired Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

If Rune can overcome the Spanish veteran, he could face a tricky second round match against six-time clay court title winner Sebastian Baez.

Further down the line could see some more tests in defending champion Casper Ruud and a potential final meeting with Monte Carlo Masters winner Carlos Alcaraz.
