Holger Rune was only able to play three games in his second round match at the Mexican Open.

Rune had returned to winning ways after beating Roberto Carballes Baena in his first round match at the Mexican Open.

This came after Rune had recovered from illness, that had forced him to withdraw from the Rio Open.

Despite overcoming his previous setback, Rune suffered another in Acapulco and has now released a statement to admit his frustrations.

Holger Rune retires from his second round match at the Mexican Open

After losing the first three games of his second round match against American Brandon Nakashima, Rune elected to retire from the match.

When taking to social media to explain his withdrawal, Rune revealed that he was suffering with food poisoning.

“Furious and so sad at the same time,” Rune said on X (formerly known as Twitter). “Had a food poisoning and was unable to play today. One of my favorite places is Mexico and I love this tournament @AbiertoTelcel. Absolutely not the way I wanted it to end.”

Rune now has a week to recover from his illness, as he looks to play the first ATP Masters 1000 event of the year at Indian Wells.

Seeds tumble from the Mexican Open

Rune, who was the fourth seed in Acapulco, is not the only top ranked player to have exited the ATP 500 tournament already.

In-fact, all of the top seven seeds have been knocked out from the Mexican Open, including world number two Alexander Zverev.

Zverev was able to complete his second round match in Acapulco, but lost in straight sets to American Learner Tien.

Rune is not the only player to have succumbed to illness in Acapulco, with both Casper Ruud and Tommy Paul unable to even take to the court for their second round matches.
