Heather Watson predicts the British player she thinks is going to go furthest in the US Open this year

There is plenty of British interest at the US Open this year, with 2021 champion Emma Raducanu among those competing at the event.

Raducanu has backed Alcaraz to win the US Open, which is now underway at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York.

Novak Djokovic won the men’s singles title last time out, with Coco Gauff clinching success in the women’s singles.

But British players will be looking to follow in the footsteps of 2021 winner Raducanu, who herself will also be eyeing a lengthy stay.

Her compatriot Harriet Dart has already secured a place in the second round, with the Briton beating Chloe Paqueta in round one.

But neither has attracted the immediate attention of former British number one Heather Watson when making her predictions for which Briton will go furthest, saying on Sky Sports Tennis: “My pick would be Jack [Draper].”

It has been quite the year for Draper, who is currently 25th place in the ATP rankings as the US Open gets underway.

The 22-year-old is on 25 wins and 17 losses in 2024 so far, winning his first title in June at the Stuttgart Open, where he beat the likes of Matteo Berrettini and Frances Tiafoe.

Tim Henman shares ‘excellent’ Jack Draper verdict

Draper’s displays have impressed another former British number one in Tim Henman, who said on Sky Sports Tennis: “First things first, Cincinnati I thought his performances were absolutely excellent.

“We were watching courtside when he went down against [Jaume] Munar and he was cooked, we thought there was nothing left in the tank, but he found a way to get the job done and when you come through those difficult matches you get better and better.”

Henman has backed Draper to reach week two of the US Open, but it does remain to be seen how far the latter can go at Flushing Meadows.

He has struggled at Grand Slams this year, with the Briton losing in the second rounds of the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and the first round of the French Open.

Importantly, however, Draper’s best displays have come at the US Open, where he boasts third and fourth round finishes in 2022 and 2023 respectively.
