Frances Tiafoe has made a winning start to his 2025 US Open campaign after beating Yoshihito Nishioka.

Tiafoe had retired with injury at the Cincinnati Open, but appears to now be feeling better after having some time to recover.

The world number 17 had already played at the US Open, with Tiafoe partnering Madison Keys in mixed doubles, but has now got his singles campaign underway.

Tiafoe is bidding to win the US Open this year to make history for his country, and he has now predicted what will happen when an American man does win a Grand Slam again.

Frances Tiafoe suggests there could be multiple American Grand Slam winners in the near future

An American man has not won a Grand Slam singles title since Andy Roddick won the US Open in 2003.

The closest person to breaking that drought for American tennis in recent memory is Taylor Fritz, who reached the US Open final last year.

Tiafoe is also a two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist, and after his first round win at the US Open over Nishioka, he revealed his belief that American tennis could have a flurry of major champions in the near future, naming both Fritz and Ben Shelton as potential contenders.

“I don’t want to say pressure. I will say that when someone does it, it is going to come in bundles,” said Tiafoe. “I think guys are going to start doing it and doing it and doing it.

“I think this is the group to do it. Someone is going to do it pretty soon here. Guys are knocking on the door. I played Fritz here in the semis, he made final. Ben has been going deep in Slams very consistently. Fritz made semis at Wimbledon and had a definite look to go the fifth against Alcaraz, you don’t know what could have happened there.

“Guys are beatable. The Tour is open. It’s close, but it’s not what it was. You have two guys at the top in Carlos [Alcaraz] and [Jannik] Sinner but everybody else can get it, for sure. Everybody else is up for it, so it’s definitely an open tour it’s just about how bad you want it and are able to execute it.”

Frances Tiafoe’s potential US Open draw that could see him make history

While Tiafoe has named Fritz and Shelton as two potential American Grand Slam champions, he will be hoping that he can be the man to do it first.

However, there are some big threats in his half of the draw, including Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Fritz.

Tiafoe may have to play Djokovic, Fritz, Alcaraz and then Jannik Sinner to win the US Open title, four players who he has won only three matches against in his combined 16 previous meetings.

Before Tiafoe can even think about playing against the top seeds, he will have to surpass another of his compatriots in Martin Damm Jr.

World number 431 Damm, who is the son of former Grand Slam doubles champion Martin Damm Sr, had to come through qualifying before winning his first match in the main draw of a major.
