Dubai Tennis Championships predictions
The Tennis Gazette writers predict who will lift the Dubai Tennis Championships trophy and claim 1000 world ranking points:
George Patten: Last week’s Qatar Open proved that predicting WTA 1000 tournaments is no easy task, as Amanda Anisimova shocked the world in Doha. Of course, the likes of Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, and Coco Gauff are still heavy favorites but another surprise winner could be on the cards. Perhaps it’ll be Karolina Muchova’s day in the Middle Eastern sun, as she finally looks to fulfil her very evident potential on the WTA Tour. The Czech star has threatened to break out over the past 12 months, and Dubai may be the perfect place for her to do so.
Matthew Johns: Dubai produced a surprise champion last year, as Jasmine Paolini won the biggest title of her career to kick start what would be a huge breakout season for the Italian. As much as it would be impressive, it does seem unlikely that Paolini will defend her title this year. Instead, I am going with world number two Iga Swiatek, who will be relieved that Jelena Ostapenko is already out of the draw. Dubai is one of the only WTA 1000 events that Swiatek has yet to win, so this would move her one closer to completing the set! Aryna Sabalenka should also be a strong pick as the top seed, but she has previously struggled in Dubai and did not look anywhere near her top level in Doha last week.
Peter Lynch: Jessica Pegula has had a roller-coaster 2025 season so far, but I think she can finally settle that with a victory in Dubai. American women have dominated the WTA in recent times, and I think Pegula can continue that theme.
Lee Clarke: I’m not going to name a winner as such because picking winning players at women’s events these days is like picking six winning National Lottery numbers. However, I fancy the person to win – if I’ve got to pick someone – to come from the match between Elena Rybakina and Paula Badosa. Both players are playing good tennis at the moment and it feels like this could be one of their weeks – especially Badosa who enjoyed a brilliant run at the Australian Open.
Liam Llewellyn: There is no clear favourite for the WTA Dubai Open, especially with many of the top players suffering early exits in Qatar last week. Therefore, as Jasmine Paolini claimed the title in 2024, it would not come as a shock if a surprise name came through the field, such as Auckland winner Clara Tauson. However, this is also an opportunity for top players to remind the world what they are capable of, such as Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng. She has recorded just one match win in 2025 so far and the Dubai Open could be the event for her to rediscover her best tennis and win the title.
