Daniil Medvedev has played many top players in his time as a professional tennis player on the ATP Tour.
Medvedev felt better prepared for clay this year, after claiming that the difference between the surfaces is getting smaller.
However, after reaching the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters, Medvedev was comfortably beaten by Alex de Minaur.
The Russian still continues to seek a 21st ATP title, with Medvedev’s last coming at the Italian Open on clay in May 2023.

Daniil Medvedev says Rafael Nadal is the toughest challenge in the history of sport
It is no secret that Medvedev and clay have not always meshed, but someone who has never been uncomfortable on the dirt is Rafael Nadal.
Nadal, who retired last year, has won more clay court titles than anyone else in ATP history (63), with 11 of them coming at the Monte Carlo Masters.

The Spaniard only lost six of his 79 matches at the tournament, and is regarded as the ‘King of Clay’ for his achievements in Monte Carlo, Roland Garros and many other tournaments on the surface.
When reflecting upon that achievement, Medvedev claimed that playing Nadal on clay is probably the toughest challenge in the history of sport.
“Rafa on clay is the toughest challenge I think probably in the history of sports to be honest,” said Medvedev.
“You know we dream of winning one Masters 1000 title, maybe two or three somewhere in the same place. But, 11 sounds amazing, some people don’t have 11 years of a tennis career or 11 years of playing in the same place.”
Medvedev played Nadal on six occasions, winning only one of their meetings, with two of their matches coming in Grand Slam finals.
However, the world number 11 never played a match against Nadal on clay, only practising with him at Roland Garros ahead of the 2024 tournament.

Carlos Alcaraz becomes youngest Monte Carlo Masters winner since Rafael Nadal
The latest name on the Monte Carlo Masters honor board is Carlos Alcaraz, having beaten Lorenzo Musetti to win his first title at the prestigious tournament.
Alcaraz and Nadal already have many parallels in their career, which were highlighted when they were side-by-side for the final tournament of the 22-time major winners career last year.
With his biggest title win of the 2025 season, 21-year-old Alcaraz has now become the youngest Monte Carlo Masters title winner since 2008.
However, that 2008 Monte Carlo Masters victory for Nadal was already his fourth, with the Mallorcan going onto win eight consecutive titles at the tournament.
Whether Alcaraz can get anywhere near that is yet to be seen, but he is continuing to build his legacy after winning his fourth different Masters 1000 tournament.
