Coco Gauff is very pleased to hear video replay technology has been expanded to more courts at the US Open this year.
The Grand Slam trialled the software in 2023 and will keep it in place for the 2024 tournament.
A year on from the greatest triumph of her career so far inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, the World number three is back in New York preparing to defend the title.
She would have preferred to do so with some momentum heading into the tournament, but things have been difficult for the 20-year-old recently.
Coco Gauff has suffered successive defeats before commencing her campaign at Flushing Meadows but she has been working very hard to turn her fortunes around.
What did Coco Gauff say about the video replay technology at the US Open?
In 2023, the US Open trialled a video review system which allows players to challenge certain calls made by a chair umpire during a match. It remains in place for 2024 and will also be available on courts 5, 7, 11 and 12.
Gauff has called for this technology to be implemented across the tour and done so again following her heated discussion with the chair umpire over a line call at the Olympic Games.
Ahead of her title defence Gauff commented on the use of video replays and hopes other tournaments will start to use the technology.
“I think we are playing for too much for that not to be a thing especially when other sports have it, when they don’t even have as much of the resources that tennis does financially,” she said.
“I think that it should be at the slams, it should be at 1000 tournaments, and I would like to see it across all levels, but I would like to see it across all levels first.
“The US Open had it last year. I didn’t have to use it, hopefully I won’t have to use it this year. The worst is when you get apologised to afterwards, it’s kind of like thanks but what is that going to do for me now?
“I think it will hold everybody accountable, I think there will be a lot less player frustration and outbursts with that. I am excited, I hope to see it continue, to see it expanded on not just at this tournament but all tournaments.”
Can Coco Gauff turn her form around and win the US Open again?
Given her form of late, it appears that Gauff will face a difficult task with trying to retain her US Open title.
She has not progressed beyond the fourth round of a tournament since the Berlin Open in June and has suffered some shock defeats to Emma Navarro, Donna Vekic, Diana Shnaider and Yulia Putintseva.
But she has been hard at work on the practice court to try and clean up certain aspects of her game before Gauff faces Varvara Gracheva in her opening US Open match on Monday.
Gauff will aim to use the support of the home fans to to give her added fuel to have another strong campaign in New York.
The champion is incredibly resilient and if anyone can turn their form ahead before a Grand Slam, it is Gauff.
