US Open defending champion Coco Gauff has crashed out of the tournament after a fourth round loss to Emma Navarro.

Gauff and Navarro are friends, but it was the latter who emerged victorious in their latest meeting on the court at the US Open.

Their fourth round clash was a repeat of their Wimbledon fourth round clash earlier this year, which Navarro won.

She beat Gauff 6-4, 6-3 in London, having been the 19th seed at the All England Club earlier this summer.

In New York, Navarro is the 13th seed, and she now faces Paula Badosa after beating the defending champion 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

Coco Gauff shares what Emma Navarro did during their US Open clash

The number three seed was flying high in the early stages of the US Open, with Gauff equalling a Serena Wiliams win record with her third round victory over Elina Svitolina.

But she struggled massively for the majority of her meeting with Navarro, with Gauff hitting 19 double faults, including 11 in the third set alone.

Analysing the match, Gauff said in her US Open press conference: “Emma played really well. She did everything well.

“I thought she was really aggressive on my second serve, so putting more pressure on my serve, and was very solid from the baseline. I expected that going in. Emotionally I have no regrets, but I wish I could have executed a bit better.”

What next for Coco Gauff after her US Open exit?

While she is only 20 years old, world number three Gauff would have had high expectations of another lengthy US Open run.

She defeated Aryna Sabalenka this time last year for her maiden Grand Slam title, but that is where her major honours have stopped.

It was a hugely impressive display from the youngster, who used her home advantage to come from behind and beat the Belarusian 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

But that experience wasn’t enough for Gauff to use to her advantage this time around, with her fellow American Navarro on a fine run herself.

Still, questions will be asked of Gauff, who now has a decision to make about which way she wants her career to go after a disappointing summer.
