Carlos Alcaraz has been enjoying life playing doubles, with both Olympic and Laver Cup success coming within the last two months.

In the Laver Cup, Alcaraz and Casper Ruud sealed a mesmerizing win on the final day defeating Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe to keep Team Europe’s hopes alive.

At the Beijing Open, Alcaraz opened his account with a classy win over Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

Dressed up in a tuxedo alongside Taylor Fritz, the pair were quizzed on their dream doubles partner outside of tennis.

With both mainly playing singles throughout the year, Fritz has recently excelled in the doubles, picking duo the bronze at the Olympics with Tommy Paul.

Alcaraz replied: “That’s a good question, that’s a good question. There are a few of them that I would love to play doubles with – LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, and one actor [Leonardo] DiCaprio would be fun.”

A huge Real Madrid fan, Ronaldo’s nine-year stint and 311 goals for Los Blancos likely have informed Alcaraz’s selection.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion was named by captain David Ferrer in Spain’s squad for the Davis Cup taking place in November.

Nadal was due to compete in the Laver Cup but he withdrew just over a week before the competition began.

With the 38-year-old expected to retire soon, a run-out in front of a home crowd at the Davis Cup might shape up to be a fitting finale.

‘Nadalcaraz’, as they were dubbed, were beaten at the Olympics by the eventual silver medallists, Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek – however the enterprising and intimidating partnership formed will force Ferrer into making some tough decisions.

Alcaraz sent Nadal a heartfelt message, saying he missed his idol at the Laver Cup and wants him to be able to play his best tennis in Spanish colours in November.
