Arthur Fils was forced to cut short his 2025 campaign after suffering a troublesome injury.

Fils withdrew from the US Open after making the tough decision to skip Wimbledon, too, with his last match coming at the Canada Open, where he lost to Jiri Lehecka.

Carlos Alcaraz raved about Fils earlier in the year, and the Frenchman is considered one of the top talents in the game of tennis.

Fils started to surprise a number of people on the ATP Tour, and there’s an argument that his injury came at the worst possible time.

Now, with the 2025 season consigned to history, Fils has lifted the lid on the injury he’s been suffering with and explained the severity of it.

Arthur Fils opens up on the injury that riddled him in 2025

Fils will be back on the court in 2026, and he will be keen to make up for lost time with his current placing on the world rankings down at number 40.

Ahead of the new season, Fils has been discussing what sort of injury he’s been suffering with and how he’s feeling ahead of the new year.

He told Punto de Break: “Without going into too much detail, at 15 I already had some minor back problems, a herniated disc in the L5 vertebra. If I’m not mistaken, the fracture has healed, but I know it’s a part of my body that can be a bit fragile from time to time. When I arrived at Roland Garros, I knew I already had a stress fracture.

“We thought it couldn’t get any worse. I tried to do everything I could to recover as quickly as possible, even skipping some steps. I felt good because it was an injury I was already familiar with. I played in Toronto. Unfortunately, I may have come back too soon. So after that, we took it easy.

“We decided it was best not to play the end of the season and completely rebuild my body, my back.

“I have to pay attention to a lot of things, like recovery. I’m also receiving a lot of treatments. I have to watch my diet. For a tennis player, when you’re not on the court, it can be a bit tough, but it’s part of the job. It’s an injury that takes time. You can’t rush it; otherwise, you’ll get injured again.

“The team and I decided to take our time. I’m 21. I still have 15 years of my career left. It’s okay, we’re not in a hurry. It’s a new approach.

“There are no worries. I’ve upgraded my medical team. We’ve laid the groundwork. We have a plan. There’s nothing to worry about anymore; now it’s time to trust the process.”

Fils can climb the rankings in 2026

Fils is considered one of the game’s brightest young talents, and it’s a shame that he was forced to miss the second half of the 2025 campaign.

At 21, however, all is not lost, and there is a sense that he can get back on the winning trail pretty quickly in 2025 and begin climbing the rankings again.

Fils has already made around $5.8 million during his career, and having previously been the world number 14, he’s had a taste for being a top 16 player.

Back injuries are never ideal, and it’s quite intriguing that he’s chosen to upgrade his medical team for the new season.

Fils will have to play his way back into form, but with a jam-packed schedule to begin the year, he should be capable of quickly climbing the rankings.
