Andy Roddick gives his verdict on Aryna Sabalenka’s behaviour towards Coco Gauff after losing the Roland Garros final

Aryna Sabalenka has received a mixed reaction to some of her comments after losing to Coco Gauff in the Roland Garros final.

Sabalenka was noticeably frustrated against Gauff throughout the match, and that continued into her post-match comments.

The most striking of those comments came in her press conference, where Sabalenka made a big claim about Iga Swiatek.

These comments were brought to Gauff, who hit back at Sabalenka after beating her in another Grand Slam final.

While Sabalenka has received much criticism for her behaviour, not everyone has gone against the world number one.

One of those to defend Sabalenka is former world number one Andy Roddick, who spoke on his podcast about her reaction after the match and claimed that she was still ‘classy’ in her defeat to Gauff.

Roddick also backed Sabalenka to bounce back and claimed that she is still the favourite to win Wimbledon next month.

“Sabalenka, it’s probably the most devastated I’ve seen her outwardly post match,” said Roddick. “She always is respectful of her opponent.

“Imagine the disappointment when she loses that match. A second heartbreaking Grand Slam loss in a final in a row, but still goes over and gives Coco her respect, even though she was down in that ceremony, she was still classy.”

“I’m a bigger and bigger fan of Aryna’s all the time. For many reasons, and I hope… it’s tough to see the forest through the trees, but, you know, she’s gonna be your favourite going into Wimbledon.

“She’s still the favourite in any tournament she enters. Well deserved number one in the world, but this was Coco’s moment.”

What is Aryna Sabalenka’s Wimbledon Record?

While Roddick has played up Sabalenka’s Wimbledon chances, she has only been able to play the grass court major twice in the last five years for varying reasons.

Sabalenka withdrew from Wimbledon last year due to a shoulder injury, but has twice reached the semi-finals.

The Championships were where Sabalenka won her first Grand Slam match in 2017, but statistically it is her worst-performing major with a 69% win percentage from her five previous appearances.

Sabalenka will look to move on from her second Grand Slam final defeat of the year on grass, where she is scheduled to begin at the Berlin Open.

The stacked WTA 500 tournament in Berlin that Gauff is also entered into will get underway on Monday, June 16.
