Andy Murray has now weighed into the conversation following the Roland Garros final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
Murray is currently a free agent, after leaving his role as coach of Novak Djokovic that began at the start of the 2025 season.
However, the Briton has still been spotted at tennis tournaments, including Murray being present for Rafael Nadal’s farewell ceremony at Roland Garros.
Most recently, he was spotted at Queen’s Club for the opening of the Andy Murray Arena and has now responded to some comments made by John McEnroe.

Andy Murray responds to John McEnroe’s claim about Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner
McEnroe is often vocal with his opinions, and has even given his verdict on why Djokovic and Murray really parted ways.
One of the more notable things that the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion has recently said came before the Roland Garros singles final between Alcaraz and Sinner.
When speaking on TNT Sports, McEnroe claimed that Alcaraz and Sinner could beat prime Nadal, who won 97% of his matches at Roland Garros, on clay.
“You would make a serious argument with both guys that they would be favoured to beat Nadal, at his best,” McEnroe said. “Do I think they’re gonna reach 20, 24 [titles], either one of them? No, because that plateau is so hard.
“But these two guys right now, it’s like when you watch the NBA and you say nobody could be better than Michael Jordan.”
After the match between Alcaraz and Sinner, McEnroe called it the best Roland Garros final ever to double down on his previous comments.
There has been a big reaction to these comments, and while Murray did not name McEnroe he has responded to this in an interview with BBC Sport.
In this interview, Murray suggested that it is perhaps too early to be making big claims like that about Alcaraz and Sinner.
“The sport’s in a really good place but it’s important not to forget what the guys have done before them, what Roger, Rafa and Novak have done,” said Murray.
“Winning 20-plus majors is something exceptional and it’s easy in today’s age to forget a little bit about that. I saw some pundits saying if [Alcaraz and Sinner] went on court against Rafa at the French Open, they would be favourites going into that match with Rafa in his prime.
“Alcaraz and Sinner are on the path to being two of the best, no doubt about that, but it takes time to build what Roger [Federer], Rafa, and Novak had. We’ll see whether they get that.”
Did Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner ever play Rafael Nadal on clay?
Although Alcaraz and Sinner never had the chance to play prime Nadal as such, they have both played the 22-time major winner on multiple occasions.
Alcaraz is the only one to actually beat Nadal, getting the better of his compatriot at the Madrid Open in 2022.
While Sinner was never able to even win a set against Nadal, with all three of their previous meetings coming on clay.
Two of those were actually at Roland Garros, where Nadal beat Sinner in both 2020 and 2021.
| Rafael Nadal | Vs Carlos Alcaraz | Vs Jannik Sinner |
| On Clay | 1-1 | 3-0 Nadal |
| Overall | 2-1 Nadal | 3-0 Nadal |
Although there will never be any future matches with Nadal, tennis appears to be in a good place with Sinner and Alcaraz leading the ATP Tour.
