Joao Fonseca has continued his rise after winning his maiden ATP Tour title at the Argentina Open.

Fonseca received plaudits from Carlos Alcaraz after beating Francisco Cerundolo to win the title in Buenos Aires.

This continues on from the Brazilian’s strong start to the 2025 season, with Fonseca beating Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open to get both his first Grand Slam and top 10 win.

Fonseca has backed as the next big star on the ATP Tour, particularly after winning the ATP Next Gen Finals title last year that has previously been won by the likes of Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

Andrea Petkovic and Prakash Amritraj predict Joao Fonseca’s year-end ranking in 2025

Fonseca broke inside the top 100 after winning his first match at the Australian Open and has now received an even bigger boost.

The 18-year-old has climbed from world 99 to 68 following his title victory in the Argentinian capital, with Fonseca being predicted to go much higher.

This has been echoed by former players turned commentators, Andrea Petkovic and Prakash Amritraj, on the Tennis Channel Live podcast.

Petkovic has backed Fonseca to break inside the top 20, while Amritraj has suggested that he could even be an alternate for this year’s ATP Finals.

“I think he is going to end in the top 20,” said Petkovic. “I hope for him he will have a slow and steady rise because that will bode well for the next 15 years instead of a quick rise which would be great for tennis.

“But for him personally I hope that it is a slow and steady rise. And nobody wants to see him unseeded in a major tournament even close to their section. That’s terrible, right? If you see Fonseca at 68!”

Amritraj added, “I will up the stakes a bit. I would say he will be in the alternate for the tournament [ATP Finals]. I would say 9-12.”

Joao Fonseca’s ranking rise over the past year

Fonseca has already made big strides up the rankings in 2025, but that is nothing compared to the colossal climb that he has made since this time last year.

When the ATP rankings were updated on February 19 2024, Fonseca was ranked all the way down at world number 655.

He is now almost 600 places up on that after winning the Argentina Open and two ATP Challenger titles over the past 12 months.
