Alexander Zverev has enjoyed a remarkable 2024 thus far on the court, reaching the final of the French Open and the semi-finals of the Australian Open.
The first failure will sting more than most, given he led by two sets to one on a surface that he had thrived on in the run-up to the tournament, but it just reaffirms his status as someone who struggles to get it over the line despite his obvious talent.
However, one place where he did not choke is the Olympics, where he is the current holder of the men’s singles gold medal.
He will have aspirations to defend that title this year in Paris, but will face pushback from a whole host of stars and, crucially, his own body.
Alexander Zverev offers update after Wimbledon injury
Making his first appearance since being dumped out of Wimbledon in emphatic fashion, surrendering a two-set lead to Taylor Fritz, Alexander Zverev won with ease as he returned to Germany.
Having admitted to having played that aforementioned match against the American on ‘one leg’ due to an injury sustained the round earlier, there were fears over the extent of his fitness.
After all, his brother provided an injury update on Zverev that did not look good.
But, cruising past Jesper De Jong 6-2, 6-2, he then had the following the say afterwards when asked about the knee: ‘Actually today morning I didn’t know whether I was going to play or not. Today, at the warm-up, it wasn’t great.
‘But then I laid down, I did all the things I could, I did some treatment for my knee and then after that it felt much better. I decided 20 minutes before the match to play and actually on the court, the match court, I had felt the best since the injury.
‘I felt better than I actually thought I was and I’m obviously extremely happy with that.’

With the knee seemingly healing up, and his presence in Hamburg sure to hopefully only reaffirm that renewed fitness, Zverev will have aspirations of striding into Paris ready to compete for Olympic glory once again.
After all, he has already enjoyed success at these events once before, winning the gold medal for the singles at the 2020 Tokyo games.
Enjoying a relatively routine run up until the semi-finals, then facing Novak Djokovic marked the ultimate challenge, especially given the Serbian had already won the Australian Open and lost in the final of Roland Garros to Rafael Nadal before Wimbledon’s cancellation that year.
Not only that, but the 37-year-old was also seeking to attain the one title that still eludes him to this day, making his desperation all the more prevalent.
However, despite falling a set down, Zverev was calm and composed, turning things around and going on to overcome Karen Khachanov in the following final.
Now returning to the site where he reached the French Open final this very year, as one of three players with a real point to prove at the Olympics, Zverev will be hoping to prove his worth once again despite fitness concerns and defend his gold medal.
