Alexandra Eala still has some significant improvements she needs to make to her game according to former US Open finalist Greg Rusedski.

Eala reached the Miami Open semifinals last year in a huge breakthrough run, and she has continued to climb up the rankings ever since.

Despite her largely positive results, Eala has faced some heavy losses over the past month, including in her return to the Miami Open.

After Eala was thrashed by Karolina Muchova at the Miami Open, Rusedski has pinpointed the biggest improvement she needs to make to her game.

Greg Rusedski tells Alexandra Eala what she needs to do to improve her serve

Rusedski spoke about Eala on his Off-Court with Greg Rusedski podcast, where he claimed that she was far too good a player not to make the top 10 in her career.

However, to do this Rusedski believes that Eala needs to make improvements to her serve, which he thinks she will be able to do by spending more time in the gym.

“She needs to improve the serve, the serve gets you on the front foot from the start,” said Rusedski. She is going to get physically stronger. She has got to get more time in the gym, build up the muscles, get a little bit quicker. She will start hitting the ball harder.

“She is still young. Let’s not forget that, she is still young and has many more years to develop. I think she is too good a player not to make it into the top 10.

“The good thing is she has a good attitude, she is working hard, but you don’t want to create this scar tissue when you are playing the top girls and you are losing so easily at times and I think she will get over that hump. She is too good and she is putting in the effort.

“She is great for the WTA but right now it’s the likes of Muchova and [Victoria] Mboko, those are the players you are looking for to break through because right now it’s been the dominance of [Elena] Rybakina and [Aryna] Sabalenka who have been the best players on the WTA Tour. I think that trend is most likely to continue.”

Eala has hit significantly more double faults than aces this year, but she actually has a higher first serve percentage than Aryna Sabalenka (65.6%) and Naomi Osaka (65.3%).

However, the major issue with Eala’s serve is her second serve, which she has only won 46% of her points on.

Eala has also only won 62.2% of her matches this year, which places her at 102nd out of everyone who has played at least one match on the WTA Tour in 2026.

What will happen to Alexandra Eala’s ranking after the Miami Open?

Eala was the world number 29 going into the Miami Open this year, but she was unable to defend all 390 of the points she earned from reaching the semifinals last year.

After losing in the fourth round of the Miami Open this year, Eala will lose 270 ranking points and will now drop outside the top 40.

While this is not ideal for Eala, she should be encouraged by being 17th in the race to the WTA Finals, which exclusively tracks points earned in 2026.

Eala will have a big opportunity to climb back up the rankings during the clay court season, having only earned 70 points on her least favorite surface last year.

The Filipina will begin her clay court season in a couple of weeks’ time, with Eala entered into the WTA 500 tournament in Linz, which begins on April 5.
