Alex de Minaur achieved his best result at the Monte Carlo Masters this year by reaching the semi-finals.

De Minaur has adapted his game to clay, beating Tomas Machac, Daniil Medvedev and Grigor Dimitrov in Monte Carlo.

The victory over Dimitrov was particularly dominant, with De Minaur achieving something Nadal hasn’t on clay in the process.

However, the Australian’s run came to an end in the semi-finals, with De Minaur beaten by Lorenzo Musetti.

De Minaur won the first set, 6-1, against Musetti and looked on track to reach his first Masters 1000 final on clay.

Despite making a late fightback in the third set, De Minaur was beaten by Musetti, 1-6 6-4 7-6(4).

After suffering the disappointing defeat, De Minaur took to social media just a day later to reveal how he was feeling.

While thanking the tournament, De Minaur expressed how he hoped that he would make a breakthrough in the near future.

“Big break will come soon (prayer hands and fingers crossed emojis),” De Minaur wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). “Thank you Monte Carlo (heart emoji).”

De Minaur’s best result at a Masters 1000 tournament came in 2023, when he reached the final of the Canadian Open.

What is next for Alex de Minaur?

De Minaur will continue to seek a breakthrough on clay courts, the only surface where he is yet to win a title or even reach a final.

Next up for De Minaur is the Barcelona Open, where he is a former semi-finalist, and will begin his campaign against Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

This will be the third meeting between De Minaur and Etcheverry, with the head-to-head currently at one win apiece.

However, it is actually Etcheverry who has won their only previous meeting on clay at Roland Garros in 2023.

If the world number seven is able to overcome his tricky opener, he could play Monte Carlo champion Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals.

De Minaur played Alcaraz in the Barcelona Open semi-final in 2022, where he had two match points before losing in three sets.

Some of the other potential threats for De Minaur include Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud, Arthur Fils and Andrey Rublev.
