Venus Williams is not finished competing at the US Open this year, even after her first round loss in singles.

Williams lost to Karolina Muchova in the first round of the US Open, extending her losing streak at the New York major.

It has been six years since Williams last won a match at the US Open, but that does not appear to have lowered her spirits.

Despite Williams having no plans to return to the WTA Tour full time, she has now entered the women’s doubles draw alongside someone she has never played with before.

Leylah Fernandez becomes the 11th woman to partner Venus Williams in doubles

Former US Open finalist and Washington Open champion Leylah Fernandez has been announced as Venus Williams’ partner for the women’s doubles event this year after receiving a wildcard.

Venus has played with different ATP players throughout her career, including Reilly Opelka at the revamped US Open mixed doubles event this year, but in women’s doubles her younger sister Serena Williams has been her main partner.

However, there are 10 women other than Serena that have had the opportunity to play alongside Venus.

Three of those have been in Billie Jean King Cup, as well as the Olympic Games and a Grand Slam appearance alongside Coco Gauff.

Despite her doubles pedigree, Venus has not fared so well alongside players other than Serena, with numerous first and second round losses.

Venus recently made a U-turn on her doubles participation, with her last appearance in women’s doubles alongside Hailey Baptiste at the Washington Open.

Baptiste and Venus won their first round match, before losing a tight quarterfinal to the eventual Washington Open doubles champions.

While many of these partnerships have not quite gone how Venus would have hoped, she is still one of the most decorated doubles players in history.

How many women’s doubles titles has Venus Williams won?

Venus Williams has won 21 doubles titles in her career, and all of them have come alongside her sister Serena.

This includes 14 Grand Slam titles, with only Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver winning more women’s doubles majors together in the Open Era.

Despite Serena admitting she found playing with Venus challenging, they also won three Olympic gold medals together, something that no other tennis player can match.

Venus Williams will now look to win her first women’s doubles title without Serena, as she partners Fernandez.

While Fernandez is more well known for her singles prowess, she is by no means a novice to doubles.

The Canadian player has been in four doubles finals, including finishing as runner-up at Roland Garros alongside Taylor Townsend in 2023.
