One of Joao Fonseca’s current coaches holds a 40 year record on the ATP Tour.
Fonseca is one of the youngest players to win a match on the ATP Tour this year, in what has been a breakthrough season for the teenager.
The Brazilian actually won his first ever match on the ATP Tour at 17 years old, which came when he beat Arthur Fils at the Rio Open last year.
While this is an impressive feat, it is nothing compared to his coach, who won his first ATP Tour match at 15 years old.

Franco Davin: The youngest ATP player ever to win a match
Franco Davin is the youngest ever winner of an ATP match, with the Argentinian winning his first ever match at 15 years and one month old.
After receiving a wildcard for the ATP tournament in Buenos Aires, Davin would play against fourth seed Hans Gildemeister.
Despite being the underdog and losing the first set, Davin would come back to stun Gildemeister with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Davin is still the youngest ever winner of an ATP match 40 years on, ahead of the likes of Andre Agassi and Michael Chang, the Grand Slam champions who also won matches at 15 years old.
| Top five youngest players to win an ATP match | Age they won their first ATP match |
| Franco Davin | 15 years and 1 month |
| Tommy Ho | 15 years and 2 months |
| Jimmy Arias | 15 years and 6 months |
| Michael Chang | 15 years and 6 months |
| Andre Agassi | 15 years and 9 months |
While he did not go on to have a playing career like Agassi and Chang, Davin did still find more success on the ATP Tour.
Just the next year at the Argentina Open, Davin would make it all the way to the final at 16 years old, before losing to American Jay Berger.
Davin would never win the tournament in Buenos Aires, but he would lift three other ATP singles titles.
The Argentinian would also achieve his best result at the French Open in 1991, before retiring from tennis at just 27 years old.
What is your boldest tennis prediction for 2026?
What has Joao Fonseca said about Franco Davin?
Although Davin’s playing career ended at a relatively early age, he has still gone on to achieve some great things in the sport as a coach.
Davin led both Juan Martin del Potro and Fabio Fognini to the biggest titles of their careers, helping them win the 2009 US Open and the 2019 Monte Carlo Masters, respectively.
The Argentinian has also worked with Grigor Dimitrov, Kyle Edmund, Cristian Garin, Brandon Nakashima and Veronika Kudermetova.
Davin is now a coach on Fonseca’s team in a consultancy role, which began in March earlier this year as he helped support head coach Guilherme Teixeira.
When speaking about Davin at the 2025 Miami Open, Fonseca was full of praise for the Argentinian.
“There’s a lot of conversation going on, and Franco is a very nice guy,” Fonseca told Tennis.com at the time. “He’s taught me a lot of things, (he has) a lot of experience from the tour.
“For now, it’s our first time travelling together… We did some weeks here last year in Miami, I was with him and my coach. It’s always Guilherme in front, and Franco giving some tips.”
Where do you think Joao Fonseca will be ranked at the end of the 2026 season?
Coincidentally, Fonseca won his first title at the Argentina Open, 40 years on from Davin’s historical victory in Buenos Aires.
The Brazilian has since added to his trophy collection, and Fonseca is backed to win Grand Slams in the future.
