Daniil Medvedev’s winning streak finally came to an end at the Vienna Open.
In his second match at the ATP 500 tournament, Medvedev lost to Corentin Moutet in an Almaty Open final rematch.
Just a week after his tough loss to the Russian in Kazakhstan, Moutet put on an impressive display to win in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4, and advance to the quarterfinals in Vienna.
Medvedev had won five matches in a row heading into the clash with the Frenchman, including an opening-round triumph over Nuno Borges, which he clinched narrowly.

A tricky round of 16 test against Moutet saw his streak snapped, however, ending his pursuit of a fourth straight tour-level semifinal.
Though Medvedev would have liked to have gone further in Vienna, an early defeat may actually benefit the 29-year-old.
Daniil Medvedev’s loss in Vienna may benefit him going forward
A big incentive for Medvedev heading into the Vienna Open was the chance to collect more points in the hopes of qualifying for the ATP Finals, but his chances of securing a spot in the year-end tournament were always going to be slim.
The former world number one is currently 12th in the ‘Race to Turin’, the battle for one of eight spots in the ATP Finals.
He has 2,610 live points to his name, more than 900 adrift from Lorenzo Musetti, who, as of now, occupies the eighth spot.
Medvedev’s loss to Moutet may have confirmed that he will not punch a ticket to Turin, but it will give him a much needed break.

Having made deep runs at three consecutive competitions, Medvedev’s schedule has been full on, with 17 matches played since the start of the Asian swing.
- China Open – Semifinals
- Shanghai Masters – Semifinals
- Almaty Open – Champion
Since appointing new coaches, Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has been in fantastic form, but now it is clear that the Almaty Open champion has reached burnout.
Medvedev can now reap the benefits of some time off ahead of the Paris Masters, the final ATP Masters 1000 event of the season, set to begin on the 27th of October, where he will want to go far.
A lengthy campaign in the French capital will truly show that Medvedev is back to his very best on the ATP Tour.
Daniil Medvedev’s results since hiring a new coaching team
After parting ways with longtime coach Gilles Cervara following a disappointing first-round exit at the US Open, Medvedev has turned his season around.
He reached the quarterfinals of the Hangzhou Open, and at the China Open he made the semifinals of an ATP event for the first time since the Halle Open in June.
In Shanghai, he dropped just one set en route to the semifinals, where he ultimately fell to Arthur Rinderknech.
Medvedev then clinched his first title since the 2023 season at the Almaty Open, winning the tournament with a statement victory in the final over Moutet.
His new appointments have worked out so far, and now Medvedev can actually spend some time working with them before the Paris Masters.
