Alex de Minaur suffered a shock first round exit at the Mexican Open to world number 103 Patrick Kypson.

De Minaur was one of the favorites for the Mexican Open title, as the second seed and a two-time former champion in Acapulco.

The world number six has been in good form as well, with De Minaur winning the Rotterdam Open at his last tournament.

Therefore, there were very few concerns about his first round match against Kypson, who came through qualifying.

Kypson had not won an ATP Tour main draw match since 2024, but produced one of the biggest shocks of the year to beat De Minaur, 6-1 6(4)-7 7-6(4).

Patrick Kypson speaks after beating Alex de Minaur in Acapulco

Kypson, the American who spent a year at Texas A&M University in 2018, is currently at his career-high ranking of world number 103.

The 26-year-old had only won three ATP main draw matches before playing De Minaur, and Kypson still awaits his first main draw victory at a Grand Slam.

After stunning De Minaur, Kypson reflected on the match in his on-court interview, speaking about how he had to do everything well to hold off the Australian.

Kypson remained composed throughout the match, but he admitted that it is something he struggles with.

“It feels amazing,” Kypson said, as reported by atptour.com. “Everything was important. I had to serve well. I had to return well. I hit my forehand really big. Luckily, I was able to do those things for a pretty extended period of time.”

He added, “[Staying calm and composed] does not come naturally to me,” Kypson said. “That’s probably one of the hardest parts of playing the sport, just keeping it together.”

As a result of his victory over De Minaur, Kypson is now confirmed to make his top 100 debut after rising to world number 93 in the live rankings.

Kypson will now play his compatriot Brandon Nakashima, as he looks to reach the quarterfinals in Acapulco.

When did Alex de Minaur last lose to a player ranked outside the top 100?

The huge differential between De Minaur and Kypson’s rankings makes this a big shock on its own, but that is not the only thing.

De Minaur is one of the most consistent players on the ATP Tour, and has mostly lost to players ranked near him.

Prior to the Mexican Open, De Minaur had only lost to Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud in 2026.

It has been over a year since De Minaur last lost to a player ranked outside the top 100, which came at the 2025 Dubai Tennis Championships.

However, this was much less of a shock, as De Minaur was beaten by then world number 187 Marin Cilic, with the former US Open champion who was on his comeback from injury.

De Minaur will now need to recuperate from this result ahead of the first ATP 1000 tournament of the year at Indian Wells next year.
