Taylor Fritz was beaten by Carlos Alcaraz at the ATP Finals, and he now has some work to do in order to make the semifinals.
Fritz praised Alcaraz before the tournament even began, and after winning the first set, there is an argument that he perhaps let the Spaniard off the hook somewhat.
The first set went the way of the American, who won a tie-breaker in convincing fashion, but Alcaraz sorted himself out and stormed through the next two sets.
After the match, Fritz mentioned a fitness struggle, and perhaps now he’s really got to take a look at how he manages his schedule going forward.

Taylor Fritz makes concerning fitness comments
Fritz has confessed he wants change on the ATP Tour, and listening to some worrying claims after his defeat to Alcaraz, it’s little surprise.
Alcaraz had some nice words for Fritz after beating him at the ATP Finals, but the most concerning part of the American’s performance was the fact that he appeared injured in certain parts of the match.
It would appear as though Fritz’s knee is not good, and he delivered some interesting comments after the match with Alcaraz.
He said: I mean, there’s definitely frustration ’cause, like I said, I felt like I had my opportunities. I mean, to be completely honest, it’s just that the flatness is just my knee. My knee’s completely cooked. There’s nothing I can really do.
“Yeah, I mean, the thing is in order to deal with this, you need a certain number of weeks to strengthen it, where you’re not pounding on it playing tennis. Unfortunately, the time period you need does not exist in the tennis season.”
Furthermore, it would appear that Fritz’s knee is going to show no sign of improvement any time soon.
He added: “I mean, there’s definitely frustration ’cause, like I said, I felt like I had my opportunities. I mean, to be completely honest, it’s just that the flatness is just my knee. My knee’s completely cooked. There’s nothing I can really do.”
The ATP has to act after Taylor Fritz situation
Fritz is expressing genuine concerns for his fitness, and the ATP should be listening to such an influential player who sits in the top 10 of the world rankings.
However, this is likely to fall on deaf ears once again, with more and more pressure being placed on the players to enter more tournaments.
Saudi Arabia will have an ATP Masters 1000 event from 2028, and that will again provide the players with more travelling and participating on a tour that is already jam-packed.
Fritz is one player who turns up week in and week out, enters tournaments and puts himself in a position to be a sound ambassador for tennis at the professional level.
Alexander Zverev cited fitness concerns before the ATP Finals, and Fritz isn’t alone when it comes to putting pressure on his body on a weekly basis.
It’s time for action from the ATP with player welfare seemingly at the bottom of their list of things to do – much to the obvious annoyance of Fritz!
