Lorenzo Musetti has enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2025, but there is still something that appears to be troubling him.

Musetti reached the Roland Garros semifinals for the first time this year, backing up his impressive clay court season.

These results enabled the Italian to reach a career-high ranking of world number six, and Musetti is in contention to qualify for the ATP Finals for the first time.

Musetti also reached the US Open quarterfinals this year, but there is something that is preventing him from reaching his full potential.

Lorenzo Musetti keeps losing in finals and has not won a title since 2022

Musetti suffered heartbreak at the Chengdu Open, losing in the final to Alejandro Tabilo despite having two championship points.

This is part of a continuing problem for the 23-year-old, with Musetti now losing seven consecutive finals since his last title win.

The last time that Musetti won a title was at the ATP 250 tournament in Napoli, where he beat Matteo Berrettini in the final.

Since then, Musetti has lost in the final of the Monte Carlo Masters, one ATP 500 final, three ATP 250 finals and two ATP Challenger finals.

After losing in the championship match of the Chengdu Open for the second year in a row, it is clear that Musetti has an issue when it comes to the final match of a tournament.

Musetti has won the lowest number of titles of players currently ranked inside the top 10, and this could really prevent him from reaching his true potential.

Lorenzo Musetti posts first message on social media after Chengdu Open defeat

Musetti was clearly very emotional after being unable to get across the line in the final of the Chengdu Open.

However, after having some time to reflect on his defeat, Musetti appeared to be trying to take the positives from his week in Chengdu.

He wrote on Instagram, “You are not DEFEATED when you lose. You are defeated when you QUIT.”

Regardless of whether Musetti is able to add any silverware to his collection this year, his big goal will likely be to clinch a place in the ATP Finals in Turin.

Musetti is currently seventh in the race to the year-end tournament, and is currently entered into three upcoming tournaments.

The first of those is at the China Open, where Musetti will play Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round.
