Joao Fonseca may just have proven he has what it takes to challenge Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

Alcaraz has dominated men’s tennis in 2026 so far, having entered only the Australian Open and the Qatar Open, and won both.

Just last year he clinched two Grand Slam titles, with his fierce rival Sinner securing the other two, which was an exact repeat of the 2024 ATP season.

Rising star Fonseca has yet to play against world number one Alcaraz, but he did just meet world number two Sinner at Indian Wells.

And while Sinner defeated Fonseca in their round of 16 clash, the Brazilian demonstrated his natural talent and impressive aggressive hitting in the narrow defeat.

It was by no means the perfect display, but it was enough to suggest that Fonseca can challenge Sinner and indeed Alcaraz in the near future.

Where do you think Joao Fonseca will be ranked at the end of the 2026 season?

Joao Fonseca can challenge Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz

Sinner’s praise of Fonseca after their match certainly speaks volumes, with the Italian having been left really impressed by his latest opponent.

He knew he was in a match from the very start, which is rare for the four-time Grand Slam champion, at least usually until the very latter stages of tournaments.

And perhaps more experience could have ended in a major upset for Fonseca, who had three set points in the first-set tie-break and led 4-3 in the second.

In the end he had to settle for a 6-7(6-8), 6-7(4-7) defeat, but there are certainly plenty of positives for the 19-year-old to take from the match.

That is true of his run at Indian Wells in general, where the teenager defeated seeded duo Tommy Paul and Karen Khachanov, while there was also a 120mph forehand smashed in the loss to Sinner.

Is Joao Fonseca the only player able to challenge Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner?

Nobody has managed to come close to the leading duo in recent times when it comes to titles alone, although a handful of players have put their hands up to at least cause them some form of stress.

Fonseca just did that to Sinner at Indian Wells, and is likely to cause Alcaraz an issue when they finally go face-to-face in ATP action.

But whether or not the Brazilian is the leading candidate to topple the pair remains to be seen, with a few select others arguably deserving of that title.

British number one Jack Draper could challenge Sinner and Alcaraz, although he will definitely need to enjoy an injury-free run to fulfil his potential.

Frenchman Arthur Fils, Italian Lorenzo Musetti and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime will also want to be included in the conversation.

Jakub Mensik is another with big potential, with the likes of Alexander Zverev and Alex de Minaur having possibly missed their window.

The same could be said of Taylor Fritz, but certainly not of his fellow Americans Ben Shelton and Learner Tien.

Can these players rival Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner?

Notably, epitomizing the real lack of a challenger to the leading duo is the fact that Novak Djokovic is their closest rival in the world rankings.

Moreover, the Serbian legend beat Sinner en route to his Australian Open final loss to Alcaraz, all at the age of 38.
