However, the world number three knew that he did not have to play either Sinner or Alcaraz in Munich, but Zverev was beaten in the semifinals by Flavio Cobolli.

Zverev is over 7,000 points behind world number two Alcaraz and is actually closer in terms of points to the lower-ranked player on the ATP Tour.

Alexander Bublik recently claimed that the gap on Sinner and Alcaraz was not closing, and it is hard to argue this based on this recent development.
Zverev is not the only top 10 player who has not won a title in the past 12 months, with Lorenzo Musetti not winning a title since 2022.
Novak Djokovic has won two titles over the past year, but both have been at ATP 250 level.
The two top 10 players with the most titles in the past year are actually Ben Shelton and world number 10 Daniil Medvedev, the latter of whom lost their most recent match 6-0, 6-0.

Both Djokovic and Alcaraz have withdrawn from the Madrid Open, while Sinner remains in the tournament.
