The ATP and WTA schedules have wasted no time in moving on from the Australian Open, where Jannik Sinner and Madison Keys won the respective titles.

Amanda Anisimova has won the Qatar Open in the latest WTA tournament, while the ATP moved on to the likes of Argentina, Delray Beach and Marseille.

And just like the Australian Open, plenty of shock results have taken place in all of the tournaments, with many big names falling early on.

WTA number one Aryna Sabalenka suffered a Qatar Open round of 32 exit, in what was her first match since losing the Australian Open final.

Her fellow Australian Open finalist Alexander Zverev meanwhile fell at the quarter-final stage of the Argentina Open, where he was the number one seed.

Daniil Medvedev should worry about future after Marseille loss

Also suffering a disappointing result was Daniil Medvedev, who lost his Marseille semi-final with Hamad Medjedovic.

Medvedev was the top seed at the Open 13 Provence, but failed to really impress as he fell to a shock 6-3, 6-2 defeat.

That exit comes after his disappointing Rotterdam Open run, where he fell to Mattia Bellucci in the round of 16, having been the second seed.

Such poor results have been a recurring theme for Medvedev this season, having started his 2025 with an Australian Open exit to Learner Tien.

The American qualifier shocked the fifth seed and the 2024 runner-up in just the second round in Melbourne, with his struggles against the future generation also now coming to light against Medjedovic.

He was the 2023 NextGen ATP Finals champion, with Tien having lost the most recent final to Joao Fonseca.

Moreover, Medvedev’s frustration has reached boiling point in recent times, with his anger certainly not helping his physical efforts on the court.

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz rises should further worry Daniil Medvedev

Not only is Medvedev’s own form a real worry for his future, but so are the performances of those around him.

Novak Djokovic is reaching the end of his career, which should be a relief for the Russian, but the likes of Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are only getting started.

World number one Sinner will be absent for three months after accepting a doping ban, but Alcaraz will be hard to stop in the upcoming events, having triumphed at the Rotterdam Open.

But Medvedev’s list of opponents to worry about certainly doesn’t end there, with recent nemesis Tien among the players that can potentially speed up the process of the changing of the guard.

His fellow NextGen ATP Finals star Fonseca is another who is enjoying a rapid rise, along with British number one Jack Draper.

Alex de Minaur meanwhile has soared to sixth in the ATP Tour rankings, while worryingly Medvedev has dropped to eighth.

With 20 ATP titles, including the 2021 US Open, the former world number one has enjoyed a superb career, but he now faces a real fight to stay relevant.

Fortunately an opportunity to recover from his latest setback is already available, with the 29-year-old among a strong field at the Qatar Open this week.
